Greta Gerwig’s Pink Barbie is the highest-grossing film of 2023 after hitting the $1 billion mark in theaters. The hit film also made Gerwig the highest-grossing director of all time. As rumors swirl about a Ken-centric sequel, it’s fair to wonder if Barbie will receive a second installment.
Directed by Gerwig and co-written by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, Barbie stars Margot Robbie as the stereotypical Barbie, Barbie’s most popular Barbie. When he begins to have an overwhelming mind about death (and cellulite), he travels to the human world to discover his true purpose in life. Meanwhile, Ryan Gosling plays her ultimate boyfriend, Ken, who will be located (but not before making Barbieland his private home at Mojo Dojo Casa).
After more than a month in theaters, Barbie has become the highest-grossing movie in the world in 2023. The film also surpassed Marvel’s The Avengers and became the eleventh highest-grossing film of all time in terms of domestic sales. It also holds Warner Bros. records’ highest-grossing domestic release and the biggest domestic opening ever made for a non-superhero film or sequel.
So, will there soon be a Gerwig and Warner Bros. Barbie movie? Here’s what we know.
We’re not sure, as the answers have been combined from Gerwig and the star-studded cast members. Robbie told Time in June 2023 that she had been preoccupied in talks about sequels, but nothing was set in stone at the time.
“Maybe a million more instructions will happen from that point on,” he explained. “But I think I’ll fall into a trap if I’m looking to edit a first movie while planning a sequel. “
Meanwhile, Gerwig told People in August 2023 that she hoped her film “would be the release of a global movie and many other Barbie movies. “In a recent verbal exchange with 60 Minutes along with her husband and Barbie collaborator, Baumbach, she didn’t “rule out the option of a movie with Ken. ‘Will there ever be a Ken movie?'” correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi asked Gerwig.
In response, the Little Women and Lady Bird director “laughed” and said she couldn’t comment. “I mean, the fact is, you know. . . I guess we’ll see,” Gerwig said with a smile.
Days after the 60 Minutes interview, Gosling and her Barbie co-star America Ferrera were asked Friday at London’s BFI Southbank if Barbie 2 was happening, according to Variety. I don’t know anything,” Gosling said in reaction to a fan’s question.
“We don’t have any information,” Ferrera continued. I will say that what Greta and Margot said is that they didn’t set out to create a franchise. They put everything on the table. Everything they enjoyed and knew how to do, they did. Which is refreshing, right? We’re not preparing this for 20 years of “Barbie” movies. But of course, I don’t know anything, so it may only be 20 years [of “Barbie”]. . . Or a Ken spin-off?
As for what Ken will look like in the upcoming episode, Gosling joked in the Q&A, “Can he be a rough Ken?Can I play Husky Ken as Sandwich Ken? Can I play this Ken next time?
We’ll keep you posted as we learn more about Barbie 2. 0.
