Jake Gyllenhaal has revealed that he suffers from a staph infection while filming his latest movie.
Speaking on Dax Shephard’s Armchair Expert podcast alongside his co-star Conor McGregor, Gyllenhaal shared that while filming a fight scene for Road House, he cut his hand, resulting in a staph infection.
Recalling the scene, he said, “We’re on the floor, around the tables, around the glass. “
During the scene, the actor was injured when he hit his hand on a window. “I felt the glass pass into my hand. I felt that feeling and thought, ‘That’s a lot of glass,'” she shared.
Gyllenhaal was injured while filming another component of the film. “I thought [the infection] was coming, that scene where you walk in with a piece of wood?” he asked McGregor.
“I grabbed your arm and thought, ‘Oh, I’m hurt. ‘ But my whole arm swelled. It ended up being staph.
Staph infections are common and, in some cases, can be serious. However, there are steps you can take when faced with the risk of infection as a result of an injury.
“We all have staph and other bacteria on our skin. This is healthy and is a component of our microbiome,” says Daniel D. Rhoads, vice chair of the Microbiology Committee of the College of American Pathologists.
“What can be challenging is when the integrity of the skin is compromised and bacteria that are usually found on the surface of our skin can now contaminate deeper tissues, where the bacteria don’t belong. “
Sometimes this skin damage can be unnoticeable, such as a slight cut or small abrasion that you don’t even notice. Other times, the balance is more apparent, as in Gyllenhaal’s case.
Either way, Rhoads says, when we have a cut or abrasion, there’s a threat that bacteria on our skin (in this case, Staphylococcus aureus, also known as S. aureus) or the environment can not only contaminate the exposed tissues, but they can also contaminate the exposed tissues. it also starts to grow.
It is a staph infection that triggers the body’s immune response, in the form of heat, pain, redness, and tumor.
“Mr. Gyllenhaal described his swollen arm. This swelling is called a “tumor. “I bet his arm is also red (flushing), hot (warmth), and sore (pain),” Rhoads says.
Staph infections can vary in severity. When a bacterial infection like this starts to spread from the area of damaged tissue to the middle of the body, Rhoads says it’s “bad news” because it means the immune formula is struggling to slow the infection.
Dr. Linda Yancey, an infectious disease specialist at Memorial Hermann Health System in Houston, offers a helpful analogy for the other degrees of infection.
“Saying ‘staph infection’ is like ‘car accident. ‘It goes from collisions to 16-car collisions and everything in between,” he said.
“Most staph infections are minor and isolated, but the most severe require medical attention. “
Mild staph infections manifest as some pain and swelling. Often, the immune formula can fend off infection and disappears without medical or surgical intervention.
However, this is not the case. ” Staph infections are most worrisome when they spread rapidly and symptoms range from local tissue inflammation to systemic symptoms, such as chills and increased respiratory rate,” Rhoads said.
In the most extreme cases, which were much less unusual before antibiotics came along, Rhoads says severe local infections can spread and cause systemic infection and then death.
Staph infections can be difficult to save because the bacteria that cause them are already present on the skin. However, Yancey says smart hygiene is the cornerstone of smart health.
It is vital to wash your hands and wash thoroughly. You also deserve to shower after physical activity. These steps can be kept blank and decrease the risk of infection.
Rhoads says, “It’s a smart idea to wash cuts and abrasions with soap and water to check for and remove bacteria and debris that can contaminate a new wound. “
It also covers open wounds to prevent bacteria from entering the skin.
Meanwhile, sharing towels, razors, and other equipment, such as makeup brushes, is a big no-no.
“People who use sports equipment, such as football equipment, make sure that the equipment is cleaned and disinfected between uses,” Yancey adds. The same is true if you exercise in a public place, such as a gym.
If you’re involved in a staph infection, Yancey says your first step is to be your number one care provider.
“However, if the infection you’re concerned about is a boil or abscess, urgent care or the emergency room is a better option because they’ll have the appliance to drain it if needed. “
It is imperative to seek medical attention if you notice that the infection is worsening and spreading or if it is accompanied by fever, headache, stiff neck and/or chest pain, increased heart rate, and shortness of breath.
Staph infections can often be treated with antibiotics; Rarely, surgery may be needed.
Staph infections occur when bacteria enter the body through a cut or abrasion. They may be mild and go away on their own.
However, staph infections can also be serious and life-threatening. If you are concerned, seek immediate medical attention.
