When you think of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the first movie that comes to mind is Superbad, one of the most productive movies of the 2000s. However, in those days, the two screenwriters and their production company Point Grey are expanding their success further. They achieved this by helping filmmakers like Jade Halley Bartlett create projects like Miller’s Girl, a romantic mystery starring Jenna Ortega and Martin Freeman that recently premiered in the 2024 movie schedule.
So when I had a chance to chat with Jade Halley Bartlett about her film, we talked about Rogen and Goldberg, and how they put “a big turn” on their project when they came off the blacklist. In an interview with CinemaBlend, the writer/director of Miller’s Girl said:
I was also surprised when Point Gray contacted me after the script was blacklisted. He surprised me because he was more used to comedy from him.
Jenna Ortega’s iconic taste is close to my heart, and the Miller’s Girl director talked about her “Ace” style in the film.
Like Halley Bartlett, I believe first and foremost in Seth Rogen’s most productive films, such as Superbad and This is the End. However, he’s also become a full-fledged producer, and he and Goldberg’s company are incredibly successful and obscure series like Preacher and some of Amazon Prime’s most beloved shows, like The Boys and Gen V.
So, in many ways, it also makes sense that Point Gray would seek to get Miller’s Girl after ending up on the 2016 blacklist, which is a list of the most beloved scripts that didn’t manage to survive. I wonder why Rogen, Goldberg and their company were so clever for their film, saying:
Comedy, if we take away the jokes, comedy is sad, you know, comedy is an intense drama. I think everyone perceives that. They’re all very much like Seth, Evan, Josh, James, they’re all very generous, intelligent, emotionally intelligent people who I think are developing their production company. And you know, I mean Preacher, Preacher is pretty dark.
Preacher is very dark, just like Miller’s Girl. This romantic mystery starring Jenna Ortega tackles the intense theme of a student and an instructor entering into a complex relationship. He is Wednesday’s star character as he descends into evil when he suffers harm through his date with M. . Miller.
During the film’s development, Jade Halley Bartlett said that she was grateful for Point Grey’s recommendation and the fact that they chose a first-time filmmaker, noting:
So, you know, I think they’re adapting to that space. But they also took a big step toward becoming a rookie filmmaker, which I’m incredibly grateful for, and their ratings were all very consistent. I was pretty transparent about it. What I didn’t know, because I’ve never achieved anything in my life. And they were so great at everything. Every note they had wasn’t meant to replace anything in the story. They were just things that would help me take the film as far as possible. But they were exceptionally great people, very kind and generous.
While the reviews for Miller’s Girl are amazing, they are visually stunning and the performances are very good. It’s easy to see why Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Point Gray saw the potential of this film and wanted to work with Jade Halley Bartlett.
If you’re going to see the movie they created together, you can watch Miller’s Girl right now in theaters.

Donald Glover probably isn’t lying about why he was “insulted” when other people compared Atlanta and Dave, but he has a clever point.
