Filming of an internet series about the “emergency era in India” at Jawaharlal Nehru University was halted on Saturday through the university’s student union, even as management said it had allowed the shooting to take place on campus premises.
JNUSU objected to the filming of the Internet series on campus, in the administrative block, calling it a “commercialization” of the university area and questioned why permission was granted to film in the administrative block when academics are not allowed to protest.
Nearly 500 crew members have been stationed on campus for the past two days to set up production facilities to film the internet series The Age of Emergency in India, a senior official told PTI.
“JNUSU illegally obstructed and also attempted to force filmmaker Sudhir Mishra off the JNU campus. The director received permission from the JNU government to film an internet series about the emergency era in India,” the official said.
Speaking to PTI, the internet series’ production manager, Amar, said: “A giant organisation of academics amounted and came together while we were filming a scene near the administration block. They also harassed Principal Sudhir Mishra and hurled insults at our team. We were forced to stop the shooting. ” Mishra may not immediately respond to the allegation.
According to the production manager, the director tried to interact with the opposing students and convince them that the internet series was not opposed to the university. However, the students continued to disrupt filming.
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNUSU) Student Union President Dhananjay denied the claim, saying, “We are not opposed to the internet series or its team, but we will not allow any form of marketing on campus,” he said. For the PTI, it is not easy for the management to return the money raised for allowing the filming.
Earlier in the day, the student group had written to the university’s administration to oppose the filming of the Internet series in the campus administrative block.
In an email to JNU Vice Chancellor Santishree D Pandit, the student union asked why shooting was allowed within a 100-meter radius of the administrative block when academics are not allowed to enter the area to hold protests.
“We heard that a Sudhir Mishra film was being filmed in the administration building. It is appalling to know that this is the same position where academics are not allowed to gather to voice their valid demands,” the additional email reads, adding that action has been taken. opposed to academics if they try to hold protests at the site.
“We opposed the advertising of our university area. This is a public university and this area should not be used for advertising purposes,” it reads.
The student framework questioned why the crew was given permission to gather academics for the shoot, saying they were involving academics in the filming of the internet series.
The student framework also demanded to know the main points of the financial transaction with the management for the filming.
