Jurassic Park: Dominion is one of many films that had to avoid production amid the coronavirus pandemic, but the bosses are taking meticulous precautions to get it back on track.
The New York Times reports that bosses spent $9 million (6.9 million pounds) on precautions, a 107-page protection manual, 18,000 coronavirus tests for actors and equipment, and 150 hand sanitizers.
Part of the charge includes renting a full hotel for 20 weeks for the actors and the team, whose idea of director Colin Trevorrow is a ‘banana idea’, but told the paper, ‘For Laura Dern, Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum and all of our actors, they were very careful.
“But knowing that we would all be safe in combination is what moved the needle. If they hadn’t sought to come, nothing might have happened.”
Universal’s 107-page protection manual also points to infrared temperature scanners through which everyone must pass on arrival and the vacuum foods delivered to them through masked personnel who are also plastic partitions.
Filming takes place in a closed set, which is reserved for pre-pandemic intimate scenes, and all spaces are wrapped in an antiviral mist before use.
Filming had already begun in London before the pandemic, and the film is the first Hollywood lead film to resume, largely because it is not founded in the United States, where epidemics are most serious lately.
For the protection of all involved, all those working in the production had to be quarantined for 14 days after their return to the UK, after which they were allowed to walk freely around the hotel without social estrangement or masking.
All hotels are tested 3 times a week and the cast has given access to a gym and a virtual teacher on site.
The actors, adding Bryce Dallas Howard, will have to be microphone to restrict contact with another person, while a post operator with a mask and shield will be available for advice.
She told the publication: “Until now, the actors were not included in the preparation. But to get one of us on a plane, we had to perceive the protocols, which he cared about and listened to the moment and the 3rd opinions.
“We are the guinea pigs who will make the leap.”
Donna Langley, director of Universal’s Filmed Entertainment Group, said a return to filming symbolizes hope for the industry.
She explained: “If a production of this magnitude can effectively handle the uncertainties of filming in the middle of a pandemic and keep others in the paintings and production pipeline in motion, there is a gentle at the end of the tunnel for the shots of all sizes and sustainable environments.”
