Britain’s King Charles will return to public duties next week for the first time since being diagnosed with cancer, as he moves forward intelligently after treatment and a period of recovery, Buckingham Palace announced on Friday.
In February, the palace revealed that the 75-year-old king had been diagnosed with an unspecified form of cancer, detected in tests carried out after a corrective procedure for an enlarged prostate.
Although Charles continued to take care of the official affairs of the state, the diagnosis caused him to postpone his public engagements in order to begin healing and resting.
“Her Majesty’s treatment programme will continue, but doctors are sufficiently satisfied with the progress made so far that the King can now resume a number of tasks with the public,” a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said.
“Her Majesty is greatly encouraged to return to some duties with the public and is very grateful to her medical team for their continued care and expertise. “
While it’s too early to say how long his cancer remedy will last, the spokesperson said his doctors were “very encouraged by the progress made so far and remain positive about the King’s continued recovery. “
No additional details were given about his condition or treatment, consistent with the same previous position on medical confidentiality.
While he was photographed and filmed performing some official duties in private, Charles’ only public appearance was last month when he greeted supporters on an impromptu walk after an Easter church service in Windsor, raising hopes that his physical condition was improving.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak reacted to the announcement of the king’s return to society by saying on social media X: “Good news to end the week!”
