In a new in-depth interview with Vulture, Jennifer Tilly says she didn’t set out to take on a horror franchise. “I was hoping I could turn my Oscar nomination into something a little better than a Chucky movie,” she said. she admits. But before that, she also had to turn her role in Bullets Over Broadway into an Oscar nomination, because Miramax wasn’t really doing it for her. “Dianne Wiest is clearly the main character in the movie. She had twice as many lines Like me. He has a romantic interest,” says Tilly. But because she’s a character actress, I’ve heard that the Weinstein Company thinks she has a better chance of winning in the character actor category, in the supporting actor category. And I said to myself: What?
Tilly was sure that the Weinstein Company was going to announce her for an Oscar, but she later discovered that she had not been nominated for the Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild Awards, or any of the pre-Oscar competitions. She then took the issue into her own hands: “I was very tenacious and made the decision to launch my own campaign,” she says. “I don’t know how to do it anymore, but then you can buy a whole page in Variety with quotes about how wonderful your functionality was. I don’t forget that they cost around $400 for a black and white ad, which was a lot of money for me at the time. So I took a picture of Woody Allen and me, laughing hysterically, put the Weinstein logo in the corner, then put in all my quotes and bought my ad. Tilly also went on a smart date with Jay Leno (“because I was smart at media shows”) and asked him to guest introduce her to “Oscar rumors for her performance” when she was invited on the show. “And I was doing it smugly, she’s doing it now,” she says.
The resulting nomination surprised even Tilly’s own publicist and angered Miramax, who feared splitting the votes in the supporting actress category. (Wiest would go on to win the trophy). ” I won flowers from everyone. I haven’t won any Harvey Weinstein or Miramax flowers,” Tilly shares. “Come to think of it, I’ve never had a single audition for a Miramax movie. For Bullets Over Broadway, I was cast through Woody Allen and sold to Miramax when it was finished. Come to think of it, I guess it was a blessing in disguise.
In recent years, we’ve learned about the behind-the-scenes damage that Harvey Weinstein can do to someone’s career. But for Tilly, who has starred in many old cult films, “it’s been a struggle. One role never leads to another,” he states. The Chucky spin-offs and series have given “longevity” to her career and she is proud to direct quite a few films; She also expresses her excitement about the new challenge of being a cast member on The Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills. “I have no complaints,” Tilly says of her career. Still, “it’s kind of strange. I heard about someone, like a documentary filmmaker, who was at the Oscars, where he won an Oscar. And he went out to smoke a cigarette and then he couldn’t come back. He was wandering around the construction site and they didn’t let him enter. That’s what I feel,” she says. “It’s like I was nominated for an Oscar, I went out to smoke a cigarette and now I’m walking through the construction, looking for a way to get back in. “
