LOWER MANHATTAN (WABC) – Laurence Fishburne has spent most of his life on screen. He had a prolific career that spanned five decades and began in New York City.

“I was looking to count before I got here and I lost count. Do you know how many videos you’ve been in?” asked Joelle Garguilo, a reporter for Eyewitness News Entertainment.

“More than 100?” Fishburne said.

And now, his ultimate role is to bet on a private exhibition about his life and that of others who have left their mark.

It’s “Like they do it in the movies. “

“I’m very curious to know what this moment will look like for you. Because it’s a full circle,” Garguilo said.

“It’s a full circle, I’ve taken the words out of my mouth. For me, it’s been a full circle since I started acting in American theater here in New York as a kid,” Fishburne said.

“Even being in Lower Manhattan,” Garguilo said.

“Especially being here in Lower Manhattan, because the first professional theater I did in Lower Manhattan,” he said, “And now that I’m a little older. “

“When other people hear Laurence Fishburne, they don’t think of a child actor, but they’ve been acting since you were older, how many years?” asked Garguilo.

“10 years. 10 years. I’m a child actor,” Fishburne said.

With age, or time, comes the prospect of immense vulnerability, Fisburne shares.

“They’ll tell you things about me that you probably had no idea about,” he said. “It’s great when it’s a surprise, right?”

“May I ask you what August Wilson will play?” Garguilo said.

“Well, it was August who first encouraged me to write in a genuine way,” he said. “We met underneath the Gershwin Theatre and he said, ‘You’ve stood up to me, you’ve been given to write. ‘”

“There’s already something said and I love that, you said you can’t be what you can’t see,” Garguilo said. “Think about the kids who see you on this stage, they can come to see you right now to open you up. “this new place tonight. “

I mean, that’s what’s special about this place, you know, it’s going to allow other people who don’t have to go to the theater maybe have a little bit more,” Fishburne said.

“‘Like they do in the movies. ‘ Let me ask you about cinema. Let me ask you about the theater, what do you still like about it?You’ve been doing this for decades,” Garguilo said.

“I love everything about it. I mean, yes, I can tell stories. And I can entertain other people and teach them and influence them, or enlighten them or motivate them and encourage myself through them. You know, that’s my gift. And I’m looking to use it well,” Fishburne said.
