Make no mistake: Movies are “meant to convey messages. ”

A summer blockbuster is criticized by scientists because it doesn’t have enough agenda? Do not say more.

Twisters, a standalone sequel to the 1996 film Twister (minus the s), hit theaters earlier this month to huge ratings success and big box office numbers. The film, starring Top Gun: Maverick’s Glen Powell, is “a well-crafted action movie. “romance that comes like a much-needed fresh breeze,” according to a Washington Post film critic.

But this gleeful summer hit has one glaring problem, according to some critics: It never mentions climate change. This omission is intentional, explains director Lee Isaac Chung.

“I just wanted to make sure that with the movie we never felt like it conveyed a message,” Lee said in an interview. “I just don’t feel like the videos are meant to convey a message. “

Not only is it precisely the kind of comment a director makes (suggesting that you’re in a position to make an entertaining movie), but it’s also subsidized by science. Even CNN admitted: “In general, scientists are the least sure about the link between tornadoes and climate change, because it is not clear exactly how much rising temperatures are changing the storms themselves or the epidemics. “

This, of course, has prevented climate change activists from getting angry.

“I think it’s an unfortunate missed opportunity that speaks to the pusillanimous nature of Hollywood in those days,” said weather scientist Michael E. Mann in Salon. La science suggests that we are seeing larger outbreaks and more destructive tornadoes due to human-caused climate change. “

Of course, Hollywood is famous for its pusillanimity when it comes to progressive propaganda aimed at the public.

In a more moderate critique, a member of the Union of Concerned Scientists lamented “the missed opportunity to get other people to think and talk about climate change,” a comment that brings us back to Lee’s point.

Politicians and Swedish activists do their best to make sure we don’t forget about climate change for a second. If a boisterous Hollywood blockbuster about storm chasers can actually quiet that noise for two hours of entertainment, then it’s worth more than the price of admission.
