Through several social media posts, Marlon Wayans paid tribute to his overdue mother, Elvira, who died this month at the age of 81.
“Losing me broke into a thousand pieces,” Wayans wrote. “I’m going to come back in combination piece by piece. You’ll be my glue. I miss you.” The message came about what would have been Elvira’s 82th birthday, which she really shared with Marlon himself. (The Scary Movie actor turned 48 on Thursday).
“Today I’m partying for either of us. In the midst of this injury, Array … I love you,” he wrote. “I’ve completed so many things, I’ve made you feel so proud… however, I now have [an] angel to get up.
In a later post, Wayans added, “Every time I saw this woman, she smiled. I see it in every woman Array … the greatness that everyone sees. The joy you can share. The sweetness and affection we all possess, but we are [too] shattered to let go. Thank you for giving me natural love. You’ll be my first satisfied wife, birthday love. You miss your baby.
Born in 1938, Elvira Wayans had 10 children, many of whom have become writers, manufacturers and performers. In addition to Marlon, the commercial circle of screen relatives also includes on-screen stars Keenen Ivory, Damon, Shawn and Kim, as well as writers Dwayne, Elvira and Diedre. The Wayans brothers have done a number of old projects together, adding I’m Gonna Git You Sucka, Hollywood Shuffle, Mo’Money, the Scary Movie franchise and the In Living Color comic series.
“I thank my mom very much because even though she had 10 children, we all had our time and space to be the baby,” Marlon told Oprah Winfrey about her mom in an interview in 2004. “It made us all feel loved. “
In that same interview, Keenen, Damon, Shawn and Marlon shared stories about Elvira. Shawn called her “the ultimate woman.”
“They don’t do them like that anymore,” he says. “She’s a strong woman.”
