2004’s Mean Girls is arguably one of the most productive youth videos of all time and has been cited for decades since its theatrical release. The franchise is back in theaters thanks to the new musical, which is an adaptation of the Tony-nominated film. The cast of Mean Girls is led by actress and recording artist Renee Rapp, who is the new Regina George. And he spoke to CinemaBlend, comparing making a song to Regina’s songs on Broadway to recording them for the film. Let’s break it all down.
Mean Girls has been #1 at the box office for the last two weeks, and audiences seem to be really responding to the new take on North Shore High. Case in point: our Mean Girls review. As you can see in the video above, I had the privilege of speaking with Renee Rapp ahead of the movie’s release, where she explained what it was like singing tracks like “World Burn” and “Till Someone Gets Hurt” after her many performances on Broadway. She told me:
Well, that’s good. It’s also a completely different way to make a song, since you’re recording everything. It’s been in my frame for so long after I’ve done it so many times that it’s just. . . It’s almost like it’s there. Except the microphone is another medium. And turning a song into a microphone is very different than making a song on stage.
Points were raised. Even with the use of microphones, Broadway actors actually have to assign their voices in order to bring their functionality to the back row. So when Rapp returned to her iconic songs for the movie Mean Girls, her voice can be much more sophisticated and come with lighter colors in her voice. Of course, she ends up fighting hard for the entire running time of the film.
Renee Rapp is the only Mean Girls cast member to have played her role on Broadway before. So he was definitely a step ahead of his peers at the beginning of filming. But as she mentioned, recording the vocals for the musical numbers in the film is very different. The new Mean Girl is full of Easter eggs, and musical enthusiasts can enjoy Rapp’s fatal new voice options. Later in our same conversation, the Sex Life of College Girls star opened up about how her voice has evolved thanks to her thriving music career, telling me:
And besides, I’ve spent most of my life turning a song into a microphone, like in a recording studio. So I feel like my voice has replaced a lot of things, in a lot of clever ways. So yes, I think it’s just a little bit different.
Renee Rapp’s new voice options were just one example of how Mean Girls brought surprises to die-hard fans of the franchise. She gained a lot of love for her portrayal of Regina and even directed songs from her album “Snow Angel” on Saturday night. Live. Se feels like the sky is the limit for the talented multi-hyphen.
Mean Girls is in theaters now and the original is streaming with a subscription to Paramount. In the meantime, check out movie dates in 2024 to plan your next movie experience.
