Cleveland Indian manager Terry Francona will return to the team Tuesday after more than a week to rest while facing a gastrointestinal illness.
The team said Francona would be on the bench when the Indians open a series of two-game houses against the Chicago Cubs. Francona has missed Cleveland’s last eight games due to the gastrointestinal problem, which has bothered him since spring in Arizona.
The 61-year-old skipped the weekend in Chicago to get some more rest. After the Cubs, the Indians will be back on tour in Detroit and Pittsburgh.
Francona is in his eighth season with Cleveland. The Indians played in the playoffs four times Francona, who led the club to the 2016 World Series.
First base coach Sandy Alomar Jr. took the place while Francona was away, and the team was forced to review their training staff after batting coach Ty Van Burkleo withdrew from the rest of the season due to coronavirus issues.
METS: Marcus Stroman’s recovery from a tear in the left calf muscle is almost complete, and he’s online to eventually make his season debut with the New York Mets next week as opposed to the Miami Marlins.
But visiting one of the country’s coronavirus hot spots played a role in Stroman’s resolution on Monday of retiring from the 2020 season.
“You obviously see the cardinals, the Marlins, you see peaks across the country, you see protocols that aren’t well controlled by citizens all over the world,” Stroman said in a Zoom call. “He sees us soon going to Florida. It was a wonderful discussion I had with my family. Going to see the Marlins soon is something I don’t need to be in this situation.”
Stroman, who is expected to be a loose agent after the season, is the time when the Mets player will retire this month. Designated batter Yoenis Céspedes left the team on August 2.
DODGERS: Los Angeles reliever Joe Kelly placed himself on the 10-day disabled list with swelling in his right shoulder.
The team said the movement was retroactive to Sunday and left-hander Adam Kolarek called from the University of Southern California’s education site of choice.
Kelly has not allowed a run in 6 0.33 innings in seven games this season. He allowed five hits to pass with five passes and five strikeouts. Less than two weeks later, Kelly was suspended through MLB for eight games for pitching two pitches near the Head of the Houston hitters, a pity he is appealing. The 32-year right is on the disabled list for the fifth time in their career.
DIAMONDBACKS: Arizona placed Madison Bumgarner on the 10-day disabled list with a bloating in the back.
The left-hander relieved after two innings Sunday against San Diego due to back spasms.
The Diamondbacks placed Bumgarner on the disabled list on Monday and chose the Jeremy Beasley right contract at their election site.
Bumgarner allowed six runs and five hits in two innings, as opposed to the Padres, without winning since he signed a five-year contract for $85 million with Arizona in the last off-season. The four-time All-Star has noticed that its speed sank in the 1980s this season and has 9.35 MPM after the start of Sunday.
Bumgarner, four-time All-Star and three-time world champion in 11 seasons with San Francisco.
