CBS has placed a direct-to-series drama order for Watson, starring Morris Chestnut, with CBS Studios for the 2024-2025 broadcast season. Described as a “medical display with an investigative backbone,” Watson is a fashionable version of one of history’s greatest detectives as he turns his attention from solving crimes to solving medical mysteries.
The Connection Line: A year after the death of his friend and spouse Sherlock Holmes at the hands of Moriarty, Dr. John Watson (Chestnut) resumes his medical career as director of a clinic committed to remedying rare diseases. Watson’s previous life has rarely ended with him: Moriarty and Watson are about to write their own bankruptcy in a story that has fascinated audiences for more than a century.
“We are thrilled to feature such a beloved character from the world of Sherlock Holmes at the center of this series and have it brought to life by Morris Chestnut in a fresh and unexpected take on the immortal doctor,” said Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment in a statement. “Craig Sweeny’s bold new vision for the complex Dr. Watson deftly interweaves rich character storytelling with edge-of-your-seat medical mysteries.”
CBS has not announced how many episodes he has commissioned for Watson. Once upon a time, the popular thirteen episodes of any first season series, with the option of nine other background episodes. But in the current disorderly programming environment and cost reduction, there is nothing popular.
Watson is produced through CBS Studios. Craig Sweeny (Elementary, Star Trek: Section 31) wrote the pilot and will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Other executive manufacturers come with Morris Chestnut; Shäron Moalem MD, PhD; and Aaron Kaplan and Brian Morewitz for Kapital Entertainment. Larry Teng will produce and direct the first episode.
