MSU College of Music launches Music for Social Justice series

By:

Michigan State University School of Music is pleased to announce a new video series, Music for Social Justice. Amid the movement that began after the senseless death of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and many others, members of the university of the school felt the desire to talk about the problems of inequality, and what better way to do it than through music.

Currently, nine episodes of the series have been filmed, all with new performances through MSU artists with brief comments on why the music they have selected is vital to them. The first video will be released on August 12 and will feature Distinguished Jazz Professor Bass University and Director of Jazz Studies Rodney Whitaker. The new performances will be broadcast every two weeks until early December. The videos will be posted on the university’s online page and shared via social media.

“The ultimate vital discussion we want to have is that everyone deserves to be free. The discussion will have to focus on equality, freedom and justice. This video series is vital to the Faculty of Music primarily because it states that we are committed to equality and freedom for all, and that Black Lives Matter,” said Whitaker, who also facilitates diversity, equity, inclusion and college club. Committee. “I think it’s vital in those times that we recruit allies, because the way things have been replaced in America is when other people come together, not blacks as opposed to whites, but blacks and blacks as opposed to racial injustice and inequality.

Currently, all videos filmed at this level are in solidarity with the anti-racist motion in the country. While this will remain a prominent topic, this series is also open to other social justice issues.
