The following is an interview with Robby Takac, bassist of Buffalo’s Goo Goo Dolls.

Where would you have performed Music is Art (MiA) COVID?

We talked about RiverWorks again, when all this happened.

When did you first realize it fit into the virtual?

We’ll see things disintegrate very early. In September, we didn’t know yet. We knew that we had to locate a style that could simply paint in all conditions, to bring other people together, to celebrate music is art.

Who was your first phone call?

Once you got the idea, what excited you?

Can you tell us some safe scenes and channels?

There are two channels for children and friends of MiA, friends who are in our camp through Bruce Moser, who passed away this year. There is hip-hop in the store, The Grateful Channel, Elmwood Village Channel and Heritage Channel with Tod Kniazuk from The Big Easy in Buffalo and Anita West from 97 Rock (including Kickstart Rumble, Miller and the Other Sinners, Organ Fairchild and Ten Cent Howl. There’s the Songwriter’s Channel, Kreepie’s Korner, 4 Deejay Channels, two Art ChannelsArray … it’s a lot of things, with varying degrees of technology, from five-camera shots to laptops with stereo microphones. There are even 360 degree cameras with Curt Rotterdam (Refringe).

Since all these acts will be played on the site, with enthusiasts watching from their computers and phones, what are the COVID disorders you face?

We have met with the other people who manage COVID compliance and are working with the county. All scenes are well separated from each other, are outdoors and artists practice social distance.

Tell us what you like most about MiA.

I love driving in the golf cart and finding all the deeds. It makes me aware of the skill in Buffalo. It’s just a small component of the skill at the festival, but it’s so big! That’s the feeling: there’s so much here you can be proud of and appreciated.

During the 1977 snowstorm, Mayor Griffin once told citizens to grab a six-pack of beers and relax. What do you propose to the virtual attendees of the festivals this pandemic crisis?

Every year, other people discover something new, that’s why it happens. It’s a good opportunity to see what’s going on in Buffalo. Sit down and have a beer … or a cup of tea.

What’s so excited to see you this year? What do you think of programming?

Well, Mark Madden probably wouldn’t be here this year because he’s officiating a wedding. So let’s miss his antics. But there’s also Kreepie, who has staged a great scene with punk, rock, heavy metal, industrial … vampires, zombies. The Grateful Channel is exciting: I enjoyed what Terrapin Station installed last year. And the Magic Carpet Ride is great, with Jacky the Green Gymnast. Now that you’ve started me … waits for the lineup to come out. See.

Latest or commentary?

It’s a new format. But our team has been so elastic over the years, with the place settings, the rain … And now that. I feel like we’re preparing for anything that’s presented to us. I just hope everyone listens …!

We hope you’re making plans for a viewing night right now. In 2020, MiA will broadcast live (worldwide) on musicisart.org from 6 p.m. midnight. Buffalo Rising will be updated as the festival date approaches, with a full list of special acts, scenes and surprises.
