Neo gets a new lease on “The Matrix” franchise.
Warner Bros. announced that the studio is working on a new installment of “The Matrix,” courtesy of Oscar-nominated filmmaker Drew Goddard, who wrote the screenplay for “The Martian” and co-wrote and directed “The Cabin in the Woods. “Goddard will write and direct a new “Matrix” film for the studio and produce with his wife Sarah Esberg (“Moonlight,” “If Beale Street Could Talk”) their production company Goddard Textiles.
Writer-director Goddard, who previously wrote “Cloverfield” and “World War Z,” added, “It’s not an exaggeration to say that the ‘Matrix’ videos replaced cinema and my life. Lana and Lilly’s exquisite artistry inspires me both. “every day and I am beyond grateful for the possibility of telling stories in their world.
Goddard’s credits include “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Alias,” “Lost,” “Daredevil” and “The Good Place. “Goddard’s Textiles is most recently in production on the ABC series “High Potential,” starring Kaitlin Olson. His next assignment in addition to “The Matrix” will be executive producing “Project Hail Mary” with Ryan Gosling and directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller for Amazon/MGM.
The films even spawned a hip-hop dance-level adaptation directed by Oscar winner Danny Boyle. Titled ‘Free Your Mind’, the play debuted in the West End in October 2023.
