New Jersey cinemas can open this Friday, September 4, Gov. Phil Murphy, the latest and most optimistic news for the exhibition industry, said Monday after California set the parameters for reopening Friday that would allow the opening of sites in San Francisco and other counties.
Governor Murphy said theater attendance would be limited to less than 25% of capacity or 150 according to the screen.
The executive’s reopening order, revealed in a normal COVID-19 briefing, includes all indoor theaters as well as indoor foods with a 25% capacity limit with social distance.
This order means that New Yorkers can seamlessly cross state borders to see a film adjacent to New Jersey and would possibly have to because Gov. Andrew Cuomo has yet to know about the timetable for reopening New York cinemas.and a financially crippling closure since March, while other places such as bowling alleys, gyms and grocery shopping malls have been allowed to reopen throughout the state.
In his own briefing on Monday, Governor Cuomo stated that enthusiasts at places to eat in New York, the only domain in the state that still bans indoor food, can now search for establishments in New Jersey.”I sense this means that other people can go through the tunnel or cross the George Washington Bridge and move to a place to eat in New Jersey where they can’t do that in New York,” Cuomo said.
The NJ news comes two weeks after theater homeowners lost a legal attempt to force the governor to open theaters. On August 18, a federal pass judgement on upheld Governor Murphy’s closure of state cinemas, rejecting a movement for an injunction from the National Association of Theatre Owners and five film chains that would have allowed them to open their doors.Theatres had attempted to advocate for discrimination since New Jersey allowed churches to open yet not cinemas.
The capacity limit for indoor meetings and celebrations such as weddings, funerals and political activities is also limited to less than 25% of capacity or 150 people, an increase of 100.
Murphy said teams that buy combined tickets in theaters can sit in combination, but that everyone else will have to stay separated by at least six feet and have everyone wear masks in theaters “unless I shoot them to drop a handful of popcorn.”
By loosening the restrictions, he warned New Yorkers not to let their guard down: “It’s a virus of opportunity. There’s no room for error. Let’s have dinner inside or go watch videos with our friends…safely and responsibly.”
