Ayana Stafford-Morris and her husband, Siree Morris, bring the delight of the classic drive-in to Newark. Newark Moonlight Cinema will host a trio of Michael B. Jordan movies this weekend at 54 Bridge Street
NEW ORLEANS, LA /ACCESSWIRE / August 5, 2020 / By Miles Fawcett
Ayana Stafford-Morris and her husband, Siree Morris, bring the delight of the classic drive-in to Newark. Newark Moonlight Cinema will feature a trio of Michael B. Jordan movies this weekend at 54 Bridge Street. Just Mercy will be delivered on July 24, Creed 2 on July 25 and Hardball on July 26. Ayana, who attended Arts High School in New Jersey with Michael B. Jordan, began his vision of a drive-in to show African-American filmmakers, actors and actresses.
The format of the screenings will be adult films on Fridays and Saturdays and family circle films on Sundays.
“Drive-in videos look good because they let you walk away naturally,” Ayana said. “COVID is a genuine thing, however, everyone should leave the house, everyone should have the opportunity to do anything with their family, so it’s the best way to get out of the house, be with their family, physically away from other people and be able to watch a movie. It makes sense.”
Ayana and Siree had to pass a required COVID inspection through the city before opening the drive-in site to consumers. The city of Newark had to make sure that the site provided enough area for a smart social distance between consumers and the interior of the concession area. Masks are mandatory for anything made outdoors of vehicles, adding the acquisition of concessions. “The city was happy that we brought this to Newark, so they were very helpful in helping us through the licensing procedure and licensing procedure,” Ayana said. “They have been a wonderful wife to us.”
Ayana was encouraged to start her own drive-in business, her documentary “Why Is We Americans?” premiered at the Lighthouse International Film Festival earlier this year. The festival adapted the pop-up drive-in approach to its projections and Ayana’s idea was a wonderful idea. “I’ve been looking to open my own movie theater for a few years now, my husband and I have talked a lot about that and did a lot of research,” Ayana said. “We were looking for how to do it, so when I saw this, I knew it was a wonderful opportunity for me to capitalize and remix one of my goals. It’s not a classic cinema, but it’s very close. Array so I’m excited about that.”
Siree and Ayana are excited to bring a new edition of the vintage driving experience. “A drive-in is a kind of American pastime,” Siree said. He believes that other people of his generation will gain advantages even more now. “We can socialize at a distance and laugh a lot in another way.”
While researching film parks across the country, Ayana found a model. “We see a lot of (movie parks) betting on Shark and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and we love those movies, we’ve probably noticed them all a million times, but those movies that appeal to my people. And the net I serve, ” said Ayana. Showing the most commonly black stories will be a refreshing replacement for the speed that other film driving reports rarely offer.
Next weekend, July 31, the Newark Moonlight Cinema will offer Girls Trip, Set It Off and Hairspray for their Queen Latifah lineup. They also plan to showcase Harlem Nights, Us, Get Out, Transformers, Queen and Slim and Princess and the Frog in the future.
The closure of Newark Moonlight is scheduled for October 4, but Ayana and Siree are already negotiating to extend it in September.
