I grew up on Transformers, have seen at least most of Michael Bay’s hit movies, and look forward to where the franchise is headed. I didn’t expect Transfomers One to be not only the most productive Transformers content ever released, but also one of the most productive movies of 2024, animated, kid-oriented or not.
Transformers One tells the origin story of Megatron and Optimus Prime, a subject rarely explored in Transformers canon, and something that may seem like it may not bear all that much fruit given that we know what each character becomes. But you wouldn’t be more wrong if you thought that, as this is a lore-rich, action-packed, emotional sledgehammer of a movie that will please all fans, and even if you’re not a big Transformers person, I think it’s accessible enough to simply enjoy a cool robot movie. Maybe even as a jumping off point for your kids to be a new generation who gets into the franchise.
However, as I watched, I wondered: is this a children’s movie?It’s PG-rated, but it’s probably the highest R-rated PG movie I’ve ever seen. Not really, of course. No bad words, no blood or nakedness. But those fights are brutal, despite being purely steel carnage, and the overall tone is much more intense than anything we’ll see at this score level. I’m definitely not saying don’t show it to kids, but just realize that you’re getting into something that’s rarely as silly or lighthearted as you imagine.
