The cheerful comedy “One of Bess Days” is one of the films that relate a horn day in the life of its protagonists, the Pals Dreux (Keke Palmer) and bubbling bubbly and Alyssa (SZA). It is the first of the month, which means that the rent is due to the damaged apartment by percentage in Los Angeles. If only Alyssa had not entrusted the cash to her boyfriend, Keshawn (Joshua David Neal).

Taken from the Slacker and Stoner comedies, “One of Them” becomes a hunt for harvesting blocks, with periodic gel frames pronouncing how many hours are left before the women are ejected. But the film’s wonderful good fortune lies in the way it rarely suddenly breaks or causes gags. (In a comedy of this type, drugs barely appear). An early fall involving a faulty dishwasher is a red herring; Director Lawrence Lamont and screenwriter Syreeta Singleton locate their character-level humor, intelligent discussion, and transparent, big-picture line deliveries.

Genuine emotion attends the humor. As sidekicks, Dreux and Alyssa share a value system, vocabulary and hearty appreciation for fun. More deeply, their bond is bolstered by an unwavering belief in one another’s talents and worth. Lamont and Singleton effortlessly mix the silly with the sincere, and although “One of Them Days” favors razzing over heart-to-hearts, our belief in this pairing never wavers. For that, hats off to SZA and especially Palmer, who lights up the screen with starry zeal.

One of Them DaysRated R for language and sex-positive humor. Running time: 1 hours 37 minutes. In theaters.
