It has applied for planning permission to alter, refurbish and extend the facility, which was taken on by Pelagia in 2016 and which uses salmon trimmings to produce fish oil and protein ingredients.

The planning application said: “Compared to Pelagia (UK)’s other facilities, the site is run down and outdated. This is due to lack of investment in the years prior to Pelagia (UK)’s full ownership of the site.”

Improvements will help safeguard the company’s future on the site and its contribution to the local economy and employment, Pelagia submitted. The factory employs 11 full-time workers.
