In his book Cinema Speculation, writer and director Quentin Tarantino discusses his fondness for various films and offers readers a number of recommendations. We’ve already explored the 2022 volume for tips to share with our readers, and today we’re back with one. Specifically, we highlight the Pulp Fiction director’s affinity for the 1970 vampire film, House of Dark Shadows.
In the pages of Cinema Speculation, the director talks about two films from 1970 that marked him a lot: House of Dark Shadows and A Man Called Horse. Tarantino reports that the initiation scene in A Man Called Horse and the death of Barnabas Collins in House of Dark Shadows “blew my mind. “
The director goes on to say, “I remember, in both moments, staring at the screen with my mouth wide open, not believing that a movie could do that. “Tarantino goes on to summarize the on-screen disappearance of Barnabas Collins. like a “slow-moving, blood-guzzling wooden stake evisceration. “

The setup is as follows: imprisoned in a coffin for over a hundred years, vampire Barnabas Collins (Jonathan Frid) is set free when a local (John Karlen) discovers Collins’ crypt and opens the coffin. Now free to roam the earth, Barnabas feasts on the blood of the living and is obsessed with the family’s governess, Maggie Evans (Kathryn Leigh Scott), whom he believes to be his lost love, Josette reincarnated. This gothic drama is a level adaptation of the old TV series Dark Shadows.
