According to a new report from Bloomberg, Apple is planning a revamped edition of its TV app that will debut later this year. As part of those changes, Apple also plans to phase out its compromised “iTunes Movies” and “iTunes TV Shows. “” apps on Apple TV. It also turns out that those features are being removed from the iTunes Store on iPhone and iPad.
As it stands, an Apple TV user can buy or rent videos and TV screens through the standalone TV app or through the separate “iTunes Movies” and “iTunes TV Shows” apps. Bloomberg reports that Apple will remove that redundancy through standalone iTunes apps later. this year and will prompt users to do everything within the TV app.
On iPhone and iPad, users can buy or rent TV shows and videos in the TV app or through the dedicated “TV Shows” and “Movies” sections in the iTunes Store app. These features will also be removed from the iTunes Store app later on. this year, Bloomberg reports.
Apple is also making plans to make tweaks to the design of the TV app on Apple TV, adding a new sidebar for advanced navigation:
The revamped app on the Apple TV box will come with a new side panel on the left side for navigating between video categories, matching a design aesthetic used through Netflix Inc. and other streaming services. In addition to running on Apple’s set-top box. , the app is available on smart TVs produced by other companies.
As Bloomberg explains, those changes are part of Apple’s efforts to consolidate its “diverse video offerings” in one place; Whether or not the new sidebar is enough to improve the TV app experience remains to be seen. The TV app is criticized for packing too many features into a cluttered and confusing interface.
Bloomberg reports that the new TV app is expected to launch in December, which likely means it will be included in tvOS 17. 2.
Earlier this year, Apple ditched the iTunes Movie Trailers app, preferring to incorporate trailers directly into the TV app.
