Report: Oklahoma State hoops adds Oakland to 2020-21 schedule

Oklahoma State basketball continues to piece together its non-conference schedule for the upcoming 2020-21 season as a pandemic hinders potential matchups. According to a report from CBS Sports College Basketball Insider Jon Rothstein, the Cowboys added Oakland University to its schedule. The game would be played at Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater.

Oklahoma State has not released an official non-conference schedule for the 2020-21 season. Rothstein has reported several likely non-conference games for Oklahoma State this offseason, some of which have been rescheduled or adjusted. According to Rothstein, the Cowboys will face Marquette in the Big East-Big 12 Battle. The game will be played at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The date and time is TBD.

In July, Rothstein reported that Oklahoma State will play a neutral site game in Dallas against North Texas on Nov. 13. The Cowboys were originally set to play Louisville in the Armed Forces Classic on that date. That matchup will be rescheduled to a future date.

Another reported non-conference matchup for Oklahoma State is Virginia Tech. The Cowboys and Hokies will start a home-and-home series this season with the first game potentially being played at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City and the return game in Blacksburg, Virginia, during the 2021-22 season.

Head coach Mike Boynton is entering his fourth season leading the Cowboys with a historic recruiting class officially secured in Stillwater. Highlighted by five-star Cade Cunningham, the No. 1 ranked prospect in the industry-generated 247Sports Composite, the Oklahoma State 2020 class ranked No. 13 nationally and No. 2 in the Big 12.

Oklahoma State is coming off a 18-14 season that was cut short after the remainder of the Big 12 Conference Championship Tournament was canceled due to the current global pandemic. Following a perfect 7-0 start to the 2019-20 schedule, the Cowboys took a turn for the worst, winning just three of their next 14 games. Oklahoma State lost eighth straight in Big 12 play before a resurgence led to it winning eight of its last 11 games.

Oklahoma State is scheduled to open the 2020-21 season against Green Bay on Nov. 10 at Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater. Other non-conference games for the Cowboys next season include the Charleston Classic (Nov. 19-22), Oral Roberts (Nov. 28), at Wichita State (Dec. 12) and Big 12/SEC Challenge (TBD).

As of now there is no reason to be concerned about the season’s future. In an interview with NCAA digital reporter Andy Katz, NCAA Senior Vice President of Basketball Dan Gavitt said the season is still scheduled to be started and played on time.

“In college basketball, we are still planning on starting the season, right now, on schedule on November 10,” Gavitt said. “We have plans across the country through our schools and conferences to bring students back to campus safely, just this month in August and in early September. Many players have been on campus for weeks now, training on campus in a very safe way and have been very happy to back playing the game they love with their coaches. So, we’ve got a high level of confidence.”
