Spider-Man, arguably Marvel Comics’ most iconic and recognizable character, was off limits to Marvel Studios for many years, until an unprecedented deal was struck with Sony Pictures.
This deal allowed the two studios to share the wall-mounted scouting robot within the MCU, starting with Captain America: Civil War in 2016 and Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017. As part of the deal, Kevin Feige and former Sony head Pictures Amy Pascal produced the Tom Holland-directed Spider-Man videos for Sony Pictures, and while it worked very well for both components, she kept Peter Parker out of any Sony projects that are officially part of the MCU.
We recently learned that the partnership “never stopped Sony from Spider-Man in its films that didn’t bear his name,” however, there was “a sense within the studio that audiences wouldn’t settle for the Spidey of Holland suddenly appearing in a live movie. “action movie that wasn’t part of the MCU. “
In fact, there are some facets of the deal that we haven’t been made aware of, but one thing is certain: Sony’s attempt to expand a Spider-Man spinoff franchise without Spider-Man hasn’t paid off. Although the Venom trilogy was a good thing (The Last Dance was the least successful of the three, but still performed well), Morbius and Madame Web were not, and it turns out that Kraven the Hunter is also destined for bomb status in the workplace.
Despite a report claiming that Kraven will be SSU’s last film, Deadline believes that the studio is making plans to move forward after a “reboot. “However, they may be considering taking drastic measures following the latest box office disappointment.
According to MTTSH, Sony is now “seriously” reselling Spider-Man’s intellectual assets to Marvel Studios.
What would this mean for the character? Basically, it would allow Marvel to include Spider-Man in any future projects and develop solo Spidey movies featuring any and all of the hero’s foes without any involvement from Sony Pictures.
Despite SSU’s mistakes, this deal was very lucrative for Sony, which is expected to benefit after the upcoming Spider-Man Four hits theaters. With that in mind, we’re not sure how much weight we give to this rumor, however, it’s imaginable that deals will arrive soon with an update, so watch this space.
“Kraven the Hunter is the visceral story about how and why one of Marvel’s most iconic villains came to be. Set before his notorious vendetta with Spider-Man, Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as the titular character in the R-rated film.”
Kraven the Hunter is an upcoming American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, produced by Columbia Pictures in association with Marvel Entertainment. Distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing, it is intended to be the sixth film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU). The film was directed by J. C. Chandor and written by Art Marcum, Matt Holloway, and Richard Wenk.
In addition to Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the title role, Ariana DeBose will play Calypso, a voodoo priestess and Kraven’s love interest (at least in the comics); Fred Hechinger is Dmitri Smerdyakov, also known as the Chameleon, who is Kraven’s half-brother; Alessandro Nivola will play Aleksei Sytsevich, also known as Rhino, and Christopher Abbott will play the villain known as Stranger.
The film earned an R rating for “Language and Strong Blood Violence. “
