More than 2500 music enthusiasts found themselves in a pile of small fenced-in spaces as they watched Sam Fender level up last night at what is believed to be the world’s first socially remote concert.

The North Shields venue gave a concert at Newcastle’s Gosforth Park, where an emerging venue saw team enthusiasts of up to five other people watching the concert on 500 separate elevated steel platforms.

The ephemeral place, called The Virgin Money Unity Arena, is the first musical occasion of its kind in the UK since the arrival of the restrictions on coronavirus in March.

Promoters say this is the world’s first social distance concert.

Backed by his band and a soft show, Fender, 26, directed songs from his debut album, Hypersonic Missiles, crowned the charts.

Members of the public wore face blankets as they walked around the site and bought drinks, while a circle of relatives held in the air a large cutout of the singer-songwriter’s face.
