Sara Bareilles in Tina Fey Peacock’s new comedy series ‘Girls5eva’

Sara Bareilles has been cast as the lead in Tina Fey and Robert Carlock’s Girls5eva original comedy series for NBCU’s Peacock. The announcement came today during Peacock’s virtual presentation for TCA members.

In the series, when an organization of 1990s hitmen is sampled through a young rapper, its members combine to give a new possibility to their pop star dreams. It would possibly be adult women who balance their spouses, children, jobs, debts, elderly parents and shoulder pain, but can’t they also be Girls5eva?

Bareilles will play Dawn, a former Girls5eva member, who is now a little uneasy in life while running her family’s small Italian restaurant in Queens. When the opportunity arises, Dawn reluctantly gathers Girls5, and that would possibly be exactly what she needed.

“It’s a difficult time to get to know women like Meredith Scardino and Tina Fey artistically, of which I’ve been a fan,” Bareilles said. “I am a longtime admirer of so many characters that have come to life in other projects, and I am already in love with women at the Girls5eva center. I’m very excited to help bring to life what I know will be an intelligent, artistic and hilarious display with a lot of heart.”

Meredith Scardino (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) will be an executive manufacturer of Girls5eva. Fey’s control is produced through Little Stranger, Inc. with Carlock through Bevel Gears. Jeff Richmond, David Miner of 3 Arts Entertainment and Eric Gurian of Little Stanger will also be executive makers. Girls5eva is produced through Universal Television.

Bareilles first won critical acclaim in 2007 with his hit Song Song, which reached No. 1 in 22 countries around the world, starting with their debut album Little Voice. Since then, he has won a Grammy Award, winning seven Grammy nominations, two Tony nominations and three Emmy nominations. In the past she appeared in the NBC live concert production of Jesus Christ Superstar and performed on Broadway in the musical Waitress, for which she wrote the music. Bareilles is also lately the executive producer of the Apple TV series Little Voice, for which she also created the original music.
