One of the most ever created Gundam game series is the Blue Destiny trilogy released on the Sega Saturn, and now we have new toys on the way for that.
Originally released in 1996, the game was an attractive replacement for other Gundam games, as it allowed you to pilot moving settings in a first-person cockpit view.
Divided into 3 parts, the games dealt with the ramifications of a new generation copying a Newtype consciousness into a computer to give normal pilots an advantage. Called the EXAM system, it was also unstable.
Over the course of the games, you went from an old GM cell suit to an experimental GM based on the EXAM formula and a prototype of the EXAM System Gundam.
However, when you were on the Federation side, the generation of the EXAM System came from Zeon. Zeon has its own cell phone compatible with the EXAM system, that of the Efreet Kai.
The RX-79BD-3 Blue Destiny Unit 3 is the cellsuit you pilot in the third game of the Blue Destiny trilogy.
A lot of this was also covered in a pretty good manga adaptation, but one that ended before the events of the third game, where you find yourself in space.
The mecha designs were also heavily based on Gundam 0080 and 08th MS Team, and Blue Destiny’s mecha designs were highly encouraged through the latter’s Ground Gundams.
Over the years, we’ve noticed the Blue Destiny mecha appearing in other games and even received a new surrogate version in the form of the underwhelming Gundam: Side Stories for PlayStation 3.
However, I’ve never had any genuine Damashii robot toy from those models before and what’s appealing here is that we pretty much get the full set. From the big GM you start with, to the Efreet Kai, the Blue Destiny GM, and both. Blue Destiny Gundams from the third game.
The strangest thing about all of this is that those toys are part of the spin-off line Watch ANIME, even though they don’t come from an anime at all.
In any case, Blue Destiny game enthusiasts will finally get the toys they deserve — the first being the Efreet Kai in December — and the Blue Destiny Gundams will be available for pre-order via Premium Bandai.
