Warner Bros. Discovery has finalized its deal to air new episodes of Sesame Street on HBO and Max, leaving the beloved children’s exhibit for a new home.

The show, which has been around since 1969, began airing on HBO in 2016, before moving to HBO Max (now known as Max) in 2019.

Max’s decision to avoid streaming new episodes comes as the platform focuses more on content aimed at adults and less on children.

“It has been a wonderful, creative experience working with everyone at Sesame Street on the iconic children’s series and we are thrilled to be able to keep some of the library series on Max in the U.S.,” a spokesperson for Max told The Hollywood Reporter. “As we’ve launched Max though and based on consumer usage and feedback, we’ve had to prioritize our focus on stories for adults and families, and so new episodes from Sesame Street, at this time, are not as core to our strategy.”

However, Max will continue to work with the show’s producer, Sesame Workshop. Max will continue to stream old episodes from the Sesame Street catalog through the end of 2027, and the existing 55th season of the series will be available on the platform in January.

“We are thrilled to extend our 10-year partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery, keeping the iconic Sesame Street library available on Max through 2027,” a Sesame Workshop spokesperson said. “We will continue to invest in our best programming and look forward to announcing our new distribution plans in the coming months, ensuring that Sesame Street reaches as many young people as possible for generations to come. “

Now, the show is for a new platform to stream new episodes of Sesame Street season 56, which has not yet premiered, and beyond.

Max reportedly intends to say goodbye to many beloved children’s exhibits from the late ’90s and early 2000s. According to Movie of the Night, animated systems such as Teen Titans, The Looney Tunes Show, Static Shock, and Green Lantern will no longer be available. which will be available on the streaming platform in 2025.

In 2023, Sesame Workshop also first shared its plans to make some creative changes to the 56th season of the program, which will air next year.

“With any change, there are evolutions and then there are things that are bigger steps, while still being the core of who we are,” former Sesame Workshop CEO Steve Youngwood told THR at the time. “We felt it was time to take a step back and think more broadly about how we’re evolving it. “

“This will give us an opportunity to dig deeper into the narrative,” added Kay Wilson Stallings, executive vice president and director of artistic progression and production at Sesame Workshop, saying the adjustments were to “reimagine. “the series.
