Sausage Party: Foodtopia is now on Amazon Prime, and the new sequel series has duplicated an unforeseen detail from the 2016 film: the cinematic references. Everything from Apocalypse Now to Seth Rogen’s Superbad is faked in some way, but one of the longest and most egregious references, in fact, the end credits series of Episode 4, which included the song “Visions Of Gideon” by Sufjan Stevens heard in the iconic final minutes of Call Me Through Your Name. It turns out that this is also one of the most difficult times to deal with legally, and Seth Rogen recently spoke with CinemaBlfinish about the option of asking director Luca Guadagnino and Stevens himself for permission.
I had the excitement of speaking with Seth Rogen, the writer, producer, and star of Sausage Party: Foodtopia, along with Kristen Wiig and Sam Richardson at the show’s press day. Regarding the aforementioned joke involving the acclaimed Italian filmmaker’s 2017 romantic film, Rogen had this to say:
It was a very difficult song to erase. We had to go to the space of Luca Guadagnino and Sufjan Stevens to make the signal personally on stage. And I love, I adore those artists. You stand on a stage where you explain, “So, we love your movies. The joke is that he eats a foot and cries. It’s the same shot as Call Me By Your Name, and the credits roll.
It makes sense that those specific rights would be harder to obtain, as the scene in question features more than a minute of “Visions Of Gideon. “Will Forte’s character, Jack, in the middle of a famine, eats his friend’s foot through the soft chimney as the credits roll. Call Me By Your Name has a very different artistic value than Sausage Party, so the fact that Luca Guadagnino and Sufjan Stevenes are fit to play is very charming. It’s possibly the cannibalistic detail of the scene that attracted the director of Bones And All.
Or we just underestimate those who make art films in general, as Seth Rogen, a pretty intelligent authority on what’s funny, said:
It’s not easy to get those other people to approve of this kind of thing, but they have more of a sense of humor than you think.
Call Me By Your Name earned Luca Guadagnino and Sufjan Stevens their first Oscar nominations, and no joke can take that away from them. It was also a turning point in Timothée Chalamet’s career, long before he became a pop culture icon, dated a Jenner, and turned heads on the red carpet. Guadagnino’s acclaimed film has its place in cinema history, and even those who created it believe it is the subject of parody.
Seth Rogen, on the other hand, adopts another technique in his work. He’s high on set, and Sausage Party: Foodtopia features an intense mix of animated food products. The fact is, a collaboration between him and Sufjan Stevens is just one of those charming and bizarre Hollywood events.
You can stream Sausage Party: Foodtopia with a Prime Video subscription right now! You can also check out our full interviews with Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, and Sam Richardson, which are as fun as you can imagine.
