Moviegoers have expressed their grief that their city’s cinema is about to close.
Lux’s Showcase Cinema in Bristol, at Cabot Circus, will screen his film in a few weeks’ time.
The announcement of the closure comes days before the Cineworld cinema in Hengrove Leisure Park closes its curtains for the last time.
Showcase will close its doors to smart outlets on November 30, much to the sadness of locals.
Gordon Bottoms told BristolLive: “Can I be the first to feel my dismay at the closure?”
“A lot of restaurants in the area have clauses in their leases that assume the multi-screen theater is in Cabot Circus and draws crowds.
“Without it, it is likely that some of those restaurants would be forced to close their doors and Cabot Circus would lose much of its appeal as a shopping, dining and entertainment center. “
When the news was shared on Facebook, many citizens criticized the decision.
One user wrote: “This is the cinema in Bristol. “
Another said, “This is terrible! We love this cinema. “
One guy wrote: “Another nail in the coffin. “
A source close to staff at the 14-screen cinema said ticket sales were slow after the 2020 and 2021 Covid lockdowns.
They also said the final decision to close the store came after a hiring piled up from Cabot Circus to Showcase.
Crispin Lilly, managing director of Showcase Cinemas UK, told the BBC: “We would like to thank all the consumers who have visited us since we opened at Cabot Circus in 2008 and we hope they enjoyed their time with us.
“We would also like to thank our committed team of on-site workers for their passion, determination and hard work, especially in the past challenging years.
“We are committed to delivering wonderful film reporting for Bristol audiences and look forward to consumers seeing our other cinema in the city, less than 3 miles away in Avonmeads. “
Cabot Circus added: “Cabot Circus’s vision is to be a leading mixed-use destination that thrives in Bristol’s city centre.
“Social, cultural and entertainment uses are a key component of Cabot Circus, and we are committed to providing renovated, world-class cinema and other complementary uses. We look forward to providing more updates soon.
In October, it revealed that the nearby branch of Cineworld would close its doors permanently on November 26.
It is expected that the building will be demolished to make way for a housing development.
BristolLive said AEW developers have permission to build 350 new ones at once on the position of the Cineworld multiplex and the bingo corridor next door.
Cineworld said: “After years of giving Bristol moviegoers a position to feel more that way, we have made the difficult decision to close Cineworld Bristol.
“The cinema will remain open until November 26 and will feature a wide variety of film premieres.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our cinema-loving consumers who have chosen Cineworld Bristol over the years. “
