Spaceballs 2: What we know about the sci-fi parody movie sequel

It’s been a while since Hollywood released a clever parody movie, but the genre is making a comeback with the announcement of upcoming titles like Spaceballs 2. A sequel to one of the most important parody films of all time (and, not forgetting one of the most prominent films by Mel Brooks, who had already discussed the concept of a Spaceballs sequel in 2015), is lately in development at Amazon MGM Studios.

Will the Schwartzes be equally strong with this upcoming sci-fi movie?Well, we still have some time before we can make that judgment. So before we try to get into ridiculous stuff, let’s keep it simple and talk about what we know so far about Spaceballs 2.

There is no release date shown for Spaceballs 2 in mid-August 2024. A position in the upcoming 2024 movies may be unlikely, however, we may see it appear in the upcoming 2025 movie schedule if it goes into production soon enough. If the original Spaceballs “instant tape” joke is real, we may already be able to see the movie.

The only known cast member of Spaceballs 2 at this time is Josh Gad. However, the most important points related to his character, or even whether or not he will be the main protagonist, remain unknown for now. In addition to being his second collaboration with Mel Brooks after his appearance in the cast of History of the World Part II, this is the second time the actor has attempted to revive a film starring Rick Moranis; the first was a sequel to Honey. given lost in the hell of development.

Gad has been acting since the 2000s, but his breakthrough came when he originated the role of Elder Arnold Cunningham in the Broadway musical satire The Book of Mormon, earning praise with a Tony Award nomination in 2011. He later co-starred in The Book of Mormon. He created and starred in the NBC short. -experienced the comedy 1600 Penn, played LeFou in Disney’s live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast, and was even part of the universe mocked in the film when he voiced “Droid Double Agent” in Star Wars Rebels. He has a third Frozen and Angry Birds movie in the works and a comedy-drama called Adulthood in production, among his other upcoming projects.

As Spaceballs 2 is still in the early stages of development, we can’t provide any main story points at this stage. However, being a sequel to a comedy that tackles the Star Wars films, we can infer that it will take aim at the most recent installments of Lucasfilm’s groundbreaking franchise set in a galaxy far, far away.

The original 1987 Spaceballs are heavily animated by George Lucas’ 1977 sci-fi film masterpiece, but with many distinct and ridiculously silly differences: They add a half-man, half-dog creature, laser-emitting rings, and a metaphysical force that sustains the universe. Bill Pullman and John Candy play contract pilots Lone Starr and Barf, who are enlisted to save Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga) and her courtly robot, Dot Matrix (Joan Rivers) from the ruthless Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) and President Skroob (Mel Brooks). Brooks also appears as a Schwartz teacher named Yogurt, and his regular collaborator Dom DeLuise provides the voice of galactic crime boss Pizza the Hut.

Similar to when George Lucas handed over directing duties to Irvin Kershner and Richard Marquand for the final installments of his original Star Wars trilogy, Spaceballs director Mel Brooks will be replaced by someone new who will handle the follow-up. Josh Greenbaum, who has a connection to Star Wars, will direct Spaceballs 2, having made a short documentary about the sound designers who worked on the franchise called Behind the Mac: Skywalker Sound.

In 2017, Greenbaum directed two feature-length documentaries available exclusively with a Hulu subscription: Becoming Bond and Too Funny to Fail: The Life and Death of the Dana Carvey Show, before making his feature film debut with the hilarious Barb and Star. Go to Vista Del Mar in 2021. He recently directed Strays in 2023, which features a fun cameo from Josh Gad and his next Netflix movie: a documentary about Will Ferrell and Harper Steele called Will.

Although Mel Brooks may not be in the director’s chair this time around, the 97-year-old comedy legend is still involved in the sequel as a producer. I must admit that I also hope to see him in front of the camera, returning as Yogurt and, perhaps, also as Skroob. Also signed on as a producer was Gad, who also co-wrote the script for Spaceballs 2, which he previously teased in an Instagram post from early June 2024.

The co-writers of Gad’s Spaceballs 2 are Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez, who also have their own connection to the franchise they tease, having written the upcoming Star Wars TV series, Star Wars LEGO Star Wars: Rebuilding the Galaxy, which will become a Disney subscription in September 2024. The duo worked in the past with Gad as writers for Apple TV’s 1600 Penn and Central Park and are also known for writing 2019’s Pokémon: Detective Pikachu and 2019’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem in 2023.

Spaceballs 2 is the sequel to a movie that parodies a franchise that requires you to watch each and every previous episode to understand what is happening. That said, it would probably be a good idea to watch the original beforehand, which can be done with an MGM subscription.

Let’s note, however, that this new film will be the second sequel to Spaceballs. A spin-off animated series aired on G4 in 2008, for which Brooks returned as co-creator with Thomas Meehan and as the voice of President Skroob and Yogurt, with Zuniga as Vespa, Joan Rivers as Dot, and Dom DeLuise as Pizza. Despite this, the series has not been very well received by critics or fans, but anyone who is interested in watching it can purchase episodes on Amazon.

You know, the best official name for the sequel would be Spaceballs: The Schwartz Awakens, but I see a lot of fans disappointed if he doesn’t confirm Yogurt’s premonition that he and Lone Starr will meet again in Spaceballs: The Search for More Money. . . We’ll find out what Brooks, Gad and company are doing. Finish calling the movie soon enough, until then, be sure to check back here for updates.
