EXCLUSIVE: In what is a hot TV show, STXtv presents Once Upon a Time in Aztlan, a new television series hosted by George Lopez, noted photographer Estevan Oriol and noted Los Angeles-based artist Mister Cartoon aka Mark Machado Market. Michael Connolly, under his Mad Hatter Entertainment banner, joined the elements. Lopez is in final talks with the star and executive product through his Travieso Productions, and Javier Rodriguez will write the pilot. Oriol and Cartoon will also produce.

This original L.A.-based series examines a circle of relatives accepting the lies of the American dream and their ability to defy expectations.

“I need to create an encouraged vision of Los Angeles through my tattoos and artwork that enriches and complements culture, opening it up to new audiences,” Cartoon said. “Together the dream team of Latin street culture and a collection of artistic minds led by George Lopez, who was born and raised in L.A. and is an icon of our community. George’s joy and sense of humor form the foundation of this team.”

The pilot will be directed by Ricardo de Montreuil, who helmed Eva Longoria and Demián Bichir in the Blumhouse/Imagine East L.A.-set drama, Lowriders. During that production, he worked closely with Oriol and Cartoon, who also were involved in the production. Oriol and Cartoon’s longtime collaborators Mark Suroff and Marco Valadez, who produced LA Originals, also will serve as executive producers with Connolly.

“I look ahead to get to this with Cartoon, George, Jada and Michael,” Oriol said. “STXtv has what it takes to expand a genuine display that can only be held in Los Angeles. That’s final. It’s no more original than that and I’m proud and privileged to be invited to this race.”

Lopez has been doing television in recent years, adding a communication display that ran from 2009 to 2011, but this would mark his first primary TV showing since the end of the hit comedy George Lopez in 2007. Starting as tour manager for Cypress Hill and House of Pain, he developed a hobthrough for photography by documenting life on the way to the most productive hip-hop columnist known; his paintings have been featured in the most productive books they sell, decided in galleries and institutions, adding the Smithsonian Center for Latin Initiatives, the Center for Contemporary Art Mesa, the Petersen Automotive Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and Art on the Streets of New York.Array He photographed Eminem, Kim Kardashian, Cypress Hill, Dennis Hopper, Blink-182, Forest Whitaker , Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Kendrick Lamar, 50 Cent and Danny Trejo, among others. He recently produced the film Lowriders and directed the hit Netflix documentary L.A. Originals.

Connolly is executive manufacturer of Amazon’s upcoming horror anthology series, Them, with Lena Waithe. He produced Hemlock Grove for Netflix and The Son for AMC. On the feature side, Connolly co-produced the How to Train Your Dragon franchise. The deal also reunites Lopez with Jada Miranda, who directs script series on STXtv and oversees the hit series The George Lopez Show while he is a programmer for ABC Network.

“Javier’s script has brilliantly brought to life these characters and this place that is all at once raw, hopeful, and entertaining,” said Connolly.

Rodriguez who sold seats to Fox, WBTV, TV with America Ferrera and Sony Pictures TV.
