The revised fall festival hall in the COVID era has continued to take shape with recent announcements of virtual/physical hybrid events in Venice, Toronto and New York, such as the total cancellation of Telluride. From now on, the AFI Fest in Los Angeles will be officially a virtual occasion when it takes place from October 15th to 22nd.
Continuing their career from Thursday to Thursday, but extending their recent maximum dates to one month in November, the festival organizers plan to have much of the same programming design as in past years, adding sections committed to global cinema and new authors. According to Michael Lumpkin, director of the AFI festivals, where other festivals are particularly reducing the number of films screened, AFI Fest is probably maximum to have only 10% to 20% relief in the number of titles presented, or even no relief. (The occasion projected more than 140 titles in 2019).
“Structurally, it’s very similar to what was done in recent years,” Lumpkin said in a recent phone call. “Present wonderful films from all over the world to our audience and have wonderful discussions and conversations about videos and industry.”
AFI Fest organizers have a credit for other fall festivals when switching to virtual events; they’ve already done it. The AFI Docs festival, founded in Washington, D.C., was held in June with virtual screenings and paid occasions. Lumpkin noted that attendance was higher than in previous years, attracting audiences from all 50 states, without the logistics of theater reserves and seating capacity.
“The joy at the end of the day was very similar, many things happened the same and we deliberately sought to have it built as a virtual edition of what we do regularly on the ground,” he said. “The appearance of the festival and its distribution are similar. What was another was just the pictures to get there.
“It’s a change, ” said Lumpkin. “Festivals and the film industry have also worked for so long in an Array style… ‘We’re going to show the film in an on-screen cinema and other people will come.’ This is very different, and [means] more conversations and questions for everyone involved. [But] we were all in the same boat, everyone faces this new truth that we have had to adapt to, whether it be festivals, filmmakers, distributors, studios – everyone. We’re all in the same boat and in combination we locate this.
For those wondering how a virtual festival can simply paint, Lumpkin noted that AFI Docs’ occasion was remarkably similar to a classic occasion in the user and on the ground. Ticket sales and online chats to create the ultimate ineffable sense of momentum that generates success at festivals.
“What we doubted the most was a stir on a track when I debuted at a virtual festival,” he said. “The rumor, the attention of the press, the commitment of the filmmakers and that sort of thing happened.
“While we were talking to some of the partners we had worked with – distributors, studios, sales agents and others – they were very pleased with what had happened. They really took credit for the festival,” Lumpkin said. “One of the main reasons for positioning movies at film festivals is to achieve intangible things like the rumor, attention and reaction of the public. So it was a very clever result.
Lumpkin also noted that “a virtual festival really democratizes the festival” because of the way it allows audiences and filmmakers who cannot physically stop at the festival site to continue participating, allowing greater access overall.
AFI Fest will most likely announce its program in September. Historically, the festival, which takes place regularly in November, has hosted world premieres of award applicants who were not in a position or did not want to attend previous festivals. AFI’s premieres come with ‘American Sniper’, ‘Selma’, ‘The Fighter’, ‘The Big Short’ and ‘Monster’, while last year’s festival opened with the world premiere of Melina Matsoukas’ ‘Queen and Slim’ and also revealed that of Clint Eastwood. “Richard Jewell”.
“I think the vital thing is that the essential piece of any festival, the movies, the voices and the stories that are at the center of the festival, doesn’t change,” Lumpkin said. “Our vision of what the AFI is and the importance of those stories is even more vital given everything that is happening in our world right now, I think it is very urgent that some of those wonderful films and voices be heard. And that’s the driving force for us. That’s what allowed us to continue, to perceive that. How do you provide a film festival? How do you provide these stories and voices in this existing situation? And, you know, we understand.
Recognizing the uncertainty only of global festivals, but of the overall overall, Lumpkin added a small warning saying, “It’s all a matter of change.”
If Donald Trump had faced the founding American father, George Washington, in one election, the current president would have had an initial advantage, Trump says. The coronavirus could have been removed more temporarily if it had given the impression in a democratic Taiwan rather than in an autocratic China, the U.S. secretary of fitness said Tuesday on a historic diplomatic vacation in Taipei. Alex Azar’s renewed complaint about China’s management of the pandemic is likely due to an additional increase in already inflamed tensions between the United States and China, where the disease first gave the impression of overdue last year. “I think it’s no exaggeration to say that if this virus had made the impression in a country like Taiwan or the United States, it may have been removed without problems,” he added.

All appeals opposing the conviction of a 93-year-old Nazi concentration camp guard have been withdrawn, a Hamburg court said Monday, making the ruling legally binding and facilitating imaginable long-term trials. The UN Security Council is preparing to vote this week on a US proposal to enlarge an anti-Iran arms embargo, a move that some diplomats say is doomed to failure and further jeopardizes the fate of a nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers. A last-minute attempt across Britain, France and Germany to negotiate a compromise with Russia and China on an extension of the arms embargo has proved fruitless, diplomats said. Russia and China, Allies of Iran, have long expressed their opposition to the US measure.
Senator Kamala Harris would possibly be at the back of the Democratic presidential list, but President Donald Trump’s allies plan to present it as more than just a running mate. If Joe Biden wins in November, the Trump team’s line will go, the California Democrat will be the president of the United States. It’s an extension of a line of attack on Biden that Trump’s crusade has been hammering for weeks: that he’s not able to govern and that it would well be a send for other Democratic Party interests to rule through powers.
