The director of the season 1 finale of Acolyte told us about the filming of this primary death scene.

Warning: SPOILERS for The Acolyte are coming!

If you thought that the main deaths in episode five of The Acolyte, titled “The Night,” meant that no other vital characters in this Star Wars TV series were going to die, you were sorely mistaken. In the Season 1 finale, appropriately titled “The Acolyte”, Lee Jung-jae’s Sol killed through Osha from Amandla Stenberg, his former apprentice, after admitting to killing her and Mae’s mother, Aniseya, Jodie Turner-Smith’s mother, 16 years earlier. This is arguably one of the darkest moments in the Star Wars franchise, and Hanelle M. Culpepper, who directed the Season 1 finale, explained to CinemaBlend what it was like to film that death scene.

I had the excitement of talking to Culpepper about his paintings at The Acolyte, which also included directing episode 6, titled “Teach/Corrupt. “Regarding Sol’s death, I asked him how he was on the day we filmed that scene and if he remembered anything about Lee-Jung-jae’s technique in the final moments of his character. Culpepper (who is also the first director to direct television episodes of the Star Wars and Star Trek franchises) began by saying:

Yes, I don’t forget that it was a very exhausting day for him. He gave a lot emotionally for it. He was one hundred percent even when he wasn’t in his foreground. And, of course, I’m telling him so you can back off a little bit, but he gave it each and every time. The hardest component is that I sought him out to be between Osha and Mae, and he has very emotional exchanges with either of them. This meant that I had to remain in this deeply emotional position each and every time, from each and every angle in any direction. He didn’t have the ability to say, “Okay, that’s the simplest angle for me,” especially since he kept doing it even when I was turning the wires. And it was very impressive to see it, and it was heartbreaking. I don’t forget it on set, I cried watching him do that scene because you can see how much he cared about Osha and how guilty he felt about what he did when he was talking to Mae.

Sol killing Mother Aniseya as shown in the previous episode, “Choice”, while striking her with his lightsaber as she attempted to use her power. Not only did she have no intention of harming him, but she used her last words to tell him that she planned to allow Osha to leave with him and the other Jedi. Sol justified hiding this information from her by saying that she sought to protect her from her and give her what she longed for, but learning this wisdom led Osha to the dark side of her. Before dying, and with Manny Jacinto’s Mae and Qimir lurking, Sol told Osha that he was “fine” with what he was going to do, and a few seconds later, he left.

In addition to Lee Jung-jae knocking it out of the park with his overall performance, Hanelle M. Culpepper noted that what made his work in The Acolyte even more impressive was the first time it was performed on an English broadcast. Matrix As she told me:

And all of this is the language barrier. It is his first series in English. When I arrived, he knew a lot because they had gone through this entire process, yet this was their first and yet he understood everything. He brought everything very deeply. It’s quite surprising to see. We were all impressed, and the wonderful thing is that he gives so much in that moment, and Amandla gives so much. So when you have two actors who give so much and it comes from something deep, genuine and they feel it, it shines on the screen and you see it.

While there is no shortage of others around the world who saw Lee Jung-jae play Song Ji-hun in Squid Game, the role that earned him an Emmy, The Sidekick was an impressive way to debut in English. Array Unfortunately, Sol’s time in the Star Wars series has ended, and his reputation has also been tarnished by Vernestra Rwoh, who blamed him for the deaths of Idara, Torbin, Kelnacca, and the Force witches. Venestra did this after sensing the presence of Qimir, her former apprentice, on Brfinishok, and although she hid it from the Jedi Council, Yoda’s cameo at the end of the season 1 finale indicates that she can tell him to accept enough to tell him the truth.

It’s not yet clear whether season 2 of The Acolyte will take place or not, but we still invite you to rewatch the first 8 episodes with your Disney subscription. As for Lee Jung-jae, he will return for Squid Game Season 2, which will be introduced to Netflix subscription holders on December 26 and will follow until the final season in 2025.
