The Garfield movie takes first place in the weekend box office in another very slow week

Last week’s cash effects were depressing. Hollywood introduced two new large-scale releases for the Memorial Day holiday in hopes of pleasing audiences of all ages, but George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Mark Dindal’s The Garfield Movie ended up being seriously underperforming. This turn of events has resulted in many tsuris in the industry, as concerns have grown about the 2024 summer movie season as a whole. . . And cases, in fact, have not advanced in the last three days.

With no new major releases on the big screen last Friday, this weekend’s Top 10 is ruled by May leftovers and the effects are pretty. Check out the table below and sign up later for an analysis.

While major Hollywood studios have opted not to release new feature films on more than 2,000 screens, The Garfield Movie and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga had a chance to take a look at growing and saving themselves from failure fame this weekend. It ended up being mixed: The family animated film based on a classic comic book managed to generate brilliant numbers from weekend to weekend and has now earned the designation of “number one film in America,” but the Australian action film failed to generate word-of-mouth fortune after winning the crown in his deyet’s box.

According to The Numbers, The Garfield Movie followed up its $24 million opening last weekend by adding $14 million to its domestic gross in the last 3 days. While those effects you’d usually need to see during the summer hit season, that’s a 42% drop, which is about the most productive outcome the movie could have hoped for. Although critics have not been kind to the film, with many belittling it for its vague and generic story, moviegoers have been friendlier. Posting an 81% viewership score on Rotten Tomatoes (compared to 36% approval score from professionals), CinemaScore surveys gave a “B” rating.

Sony’s filmmakers and executives are probably now folding their hands that The Garfield Movie can, regardless, have a fate similar to what happened with Peter Sohn’s Elemental last summer. When the Pixar film hit theaters last June, it also grossed less than $30 million in its first 3 days and looked like it was going to be a flop. Instead, it remained in the Top 10 for a month and a part with small drops from weekend to weekend, and for as long as it finished betting on the U. S. big screen, it remained in the Top 10. In the U. S. and Canada, it grossed $154. 4 million, of which $330. 4 million grossed overseas. At the end of 2023, it ranked as the 17th biggest opening of the year domestically.

Interestingly, the biggest hurdle The Garfield Movie will have to overcome to achieve such a race will be the new Pixar edition, which is expected to arrive in a few weeks. Kelsey Mann’s Inside Out 2 will be one of the biggest videos of the summer, and it’ll target the exact same demographic that’s lately looking to see Chris Pratt, the world’s most famous orange sloth, who hates Monday. cat. When kids turn their attention to Pixar’s emotional sequel, there’s a good chance the box office numbers will plummet.

Unfortunately, there are actually positives or similar opportunities for optimism in the discussion of Furiosa. While George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road is a much-loved film that grossed $153. 6 million when it hit theaters in 2015, the new prequel is struggling to gain similar degrees of hype, which is a hard pill to swallow given that it has the same CinemaScore score as The Garfield Movie and has garnered critical acclaim.

After earning just $26. 3 million in its first 3 days of theatrical release, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga earned just $10. 8 million in its second weekend, a drop of about 59%. The film has grossed $49. 7 million domestically so far, and combined with what it has earned overseas, it has grossed $82. 2 million worldwide. Given that the film was made on a budget of $168 million (according to the deadline), it’s not in a smart monetary position lately.

Given the film’s reception, it’s safe to expect that it will eventually have a significant legacy, as other people will end up watching it when it hits the home video market. . . But it’s clearly not ideal. Furiosa is a movie made to be seen on the biggest screen imaginable so you can fully immerse yourself in the world, and it’s a shame that more people don’t appreciate that fact right now.

To conclude on a more positive note, I’ll highlight a milestone for what has been the most successful launch through the summer of 2024. In its fourth weekend of release, Wes Ball’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is still lagging behind. in the top five and has added $8. 8 million to home-priced ticket sales in the last 3 days. This brings its domestic gross to $140 million, and when combined with what the film has grossed in foreign territories, it means it has now grossed over $300 million ($310. 9 million, to be more precise).

It’s unclear whether the name will ultimately be able to generate more than the films in the César trilogy starring Andy Serkis (the lowest-grossing name was Rupert Wyatt’s Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, which grossed $471 million in 2011). However, the numbers recommend that the Planet Of The Apes franchise remains very strong as it launches its new era. Unfortunately, we’re still waiting for news of a sequel.

Looking ahead, we expect the box office to get a big boost this weekend thanks to the stellar strength of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah’s Bad Boys: Ride Or Die is coming this Friday, and I’ll be back next Sunday here at CinemaBlend to report on their performance.
