NEWS. . . BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT
The most popular movie on Netflix today in the world has managed to get 25,700,000 views despite a terrible reception from both fans and critics.
Trigger Warning is a made-for-platform action-revenge film, heralding the return of 2000s icon Jessica Alba, 43, as Special Forces Commando Parker, who returns to his small American town after the mysterious death of his father.
The film managed to maintain its number one spot in the UK over the weekend, following its release on Friday, and viewership figures now confirm its dominant performance.
Trigger Warning recorded 45,900,000 hours of viewing in its first 3 days of streaming on Netflix, from June 21 to 23, which the streamer divided into its runtime (one hour and 47 minutes) between which at least 25. 7 million more people had logged in to watch it. .
It is also ahead of its closest rival in the global rankings for the most-watched English-language title last week, with the animation Ultraman: Rising in second place with just 7. 9 million views.
However, despite Trigger Warning’s obvious popularity, that didn’t stop the film from having a rather embarrassing poor stream on Rotten Tomatoes.
Lately, the film has a depressing 20% score based on 30 reviews on the review aggregator’s website, with critics calling it a “vague and updated retread” of the vigilante action genre and accusing it of being “completely silly and fatally slow. ”
“It seems as if Jessica Alba’s vehicle doesn’t bother to make the most of what she’s stealing,” IGN’s Trigger Warning magazine added.
However, the score is even lower, at just 15%, and more than 250 viewers noted flaws in the film’s performance, script, and “flat” narration.
“I was surprised that Alba chose this film as a vehicle for her comeback. Pathetic dialogue, mediocre performances, bad action scenes, boring pace. . . ‘, complained viewer Adam A.
“I’m amazed at how rotten this movie tomato is. Totally amazed. Half a star is more than generous. Don’t waste your time,” J G complained.
Meanwhile, fan Zach R admitted his retirement from the film as a half-star: “We literally couldn’t finish it because it was so horrible. After forty-five minutes, we liked watching the paint dry and moved on.
In Trigger Warning, Parker d’Alba takes over his father’s bar after his death, before stumbling upon a violent gang and getting caught up in a violent conspiracy around his late father.
The film also eviscerated the audience on social media, who were quick to express their displeasure.
“Look at the warning of cause. Dammit. . . it’s bad, very bad. . . I love female action movies, Jessica Alba is beautiful, but she’s just irritating,” @LiniBKK wrote on the social media platform X.
“Jessica Alba’s powers of action were wasted on Trigger Warning. More of her, please, but in better movies,” pleaded @malone Speaking.
“Wow, Jessica Alba stars in the worst movie [sic] that Lifetime forgot to make. Scary activation warning,” @5Noxa said.
Unfortunately, this is the latest in a string of successes for Alba, who hasn’t managed to earn a positive RT score since 2014, with the comedy Stretch, which she starred in alongside Chris Pine and Patrick Wilson.
As ScreenRant noted, none of Alba’s films have since scored higher than 45%, either from critics or critics, making it a decade-long losing streak for the star.
The actress’s three most recent films in the past ten years have garnered less than 30% of the votes on Rotten Tomatoes: 2019’s Killers Anonymous earned an embarrassing critical score of 0% and barely beat Trigger Warning with a score of 16%.
Despite this, Trigger Warning maintains its position as a choice on Netflix in the UK this weekend, ahead of the documentary 24 Hours on Lidl and the just-added 2023 survival drama The End We Start From, starring Jodie Comer.
The star also won a special award this week after the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed that she was one of 487 artists and executives invited to be a member of the organization this year.
She joins the acting branch alongside Academy Award nominee Lily Gladstone, Academy Award winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph The Holdovers and Catherine O’Hara.
Alba began her acting career as a teenager, when she played the lead role in the sci-fi action series Dark Angel.
Since then, she has starred in the 2003 dance romantic comedy Honey, played Sue Storm in 2005’s Fantastic Four and its sequel, and starred in the 2005 comedy film Sin City.
It is possible that her past works would have had better results among critics and audiences, but it was not all laughter for the actress and businesswoman.
Reflecting on her paintings with Marie Claire in 2022, Jessica explained how she felt “objectified” and “uncomfortable” in her heyday in the 2000s.
“I had an exhibition that premiered when I was 19 years old,” she told the publication.
“And right away, everyone had a strong opinion of me because of the way I do marketing.
“I wanted to be sexy, that tough. That’s what other people were waiting for. . . I was looking to be chic and elegant!”
