Romantic comedies are a tried-and-true genre in the film world, known for making money and breaking with the pop culture lexicon. A new addition came with The Idea of You, which is one of the most productive romantic comedies I’ve noticed in a while. This movie (which can be streamed with an Amazon Prime membership) didn’t mind being as smart as it was, and I give all the credit to Anne Hathaway.
The Idea of You may not be in theaters, but the movie is still having a big time on Amazon. I think the new romantic comedy will be among Anne Hathaway’s most productive films, because her chemistry with Nicholas Galitzine is on fire and the film is a sweet, romantic tale that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Although Hathaway is arguably one of the main reasons why this express tone translated so well.
The trailer for The Idea of You showed off its premise: a single mom/artist named Solène goes to Coachella with her daughter and has a cute encounter with pop star Hayes (Galitzine). They temporarily fall in love with another, but their mega fame poses a number of disorders in this developing romance. Hathaway perfectly sells Solène’s charm to this young man and the confusing emotions that come with this infatuation.
As in most romantic comedies, there are pitfalls that save our protapassnistas from being satisfied forever. This happens when Solène and Hayes go viral and their personal life becomes very public. Anne Hathaway brings emotional functionality to those scenes, and it’s never temporary. too far into melodrama or makes the movie less funny. This is perhaps the Oscar-winning actress’s greatest gift for The Idea of You: she plays the dramatic scenes honestly, but never takes her functionality too far.
Although The Idea of You has some tweaks from the e-book on which it is based, the reception of the film by audiences is overwhelmingly positive. And while much of the discussion about the film has focused on idol Nicholas Galiztine, Hathaway is at the center of the film. Seeing the world through Solene’s eyes is what sells the film’s romance, plus the wonderful chemistry Hathaway and Galitzine share.
I’ve been saying for a while that Anne Hathaway has never had a bad performance. And The Idea of You, once again, shows how it can expertly adapt to the tone and genre of any given project. But it also makes me need to see her in more romantic comedies. As for his co-star, Nicholas Galitzine has Amazon’s golden boy and recently signed a contract to star in a sequel to Red, White, and Royal Blue.
The Idea of You is now streaming on Amazon. Be sure to check the movie dates in 2024 to plan your next movie experience.
Corey was born and raised in New Jersey. Se graduated from Ramapo College in New Jersey with a bachelor’s degree in Theatre and Literature. After working in administrative theater for a year in New York City, he started as a weekend editor at CinemaBlend. Since then, he’s been able to brace himself for criticism, phone calls, and press conferences, and now he can appear on camera with some of his favorite actors. . . though not in the way I would have predicted as a child. He’s especially proud of covering horror franchises like Scream and Halloween, as well as musicals like West Side Story. Favorite interviews include Steven Spielberg, Spike Lee, Jamie Lee Curtis, and more.
Zack Snyder says Netflix needs him to continue with the Rebel Moon movies, but enthusiasts will be excited to find out which of his film franchises he needs to rewatch.
