This will be the first film in the franchise directed by Lily or Lana Wachowski.
Warner Bros. se is gearing up to return to The Matrix, but this time there may not be a Wachowski at the helm.
The studio has announced plans to continue the franchise, with a fifth Matrix movie recently in development. It will be the first installment in Lana and Lily Wachowski’s series of cyber action films as directors. Instead, Cabin in the Woods and The Martian screenwriters Drew Goddard will direct, write the screenplay and produce with his Goddard Textiles co-star, Sarah Esberg.
Lana Wachowski, who directed The Matrix: Resurrections in 2021, is the executive producer.
While the main plot points weren’t specified, Warner Bros. Motion Pictures’ Jesse Ehrman has revealed a story that will delve into the fantasy world of the franchise, without deviating too much from its roots.

Goddard had been nominated in the past for an Oscar for writing The Martian, the sci-fi adaptation directed by Ridley Scott. He is also known for writing Cloverfield, World War Z, and Bad Times in El Royale, the latter of which he also directed.

No details about the film’s cast have been shared. The latest installment saw the return of franchise stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss as Neo and Trinity, while Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas also starred.
