Postponed last year due to filming costs, lack of investment and a retired producer, the reimagined and restructured festival will host dozens of bands, workshops and even a $300 Story Slam.
“It was a tough decision to make,” Corine Demas, HotC’s director of programming, says of 2023. “But this year we have restarted and we are in a position to move forward.

“It’s going to be a fabulous anniversary. “
This year’s exclusive theme is “Reboot,” which is the most sensible of the festival’s existing mantra of “inspiration and opportunity through the arts. “
Both concepts can be traced back to the festival’s roots some twenty years ago: an effort to breathe more life into a community that has since been reshaped into a striking little grocery shopping domain with a very communal vibe: from the renovated Spinelli’s Bar Italia to the newly renovated Spinelli’s Bar Italia. Reopened. Violets/Love Object Boutique, on the cornerstone Piazza with its Makers Hive and the antique gem available Paper Birch Books, which will soon have its own café.
Wandering through the festival may seem irrelevant here, but the surrounding network is a component of the identity of the Heart of the City.
Take advantage of the musical program during the two days.
“We have an 80-20 policy that 80% of teams should have a strong connection to the city center, at least one member,” says Demas.
The others will have to be at least from Edmonton.
In addition to the program, highlights come with queer pop-punk band Borderline Thrills, rhythm Marco Claveria Project, rockabilly trio The Confusionaires, Edmonton Latin Orchestra, sexy psycho-surf band The Frolics, octopus-loving ensemble Funk Cove, métis scholar Kaely Jade. , singer-songwriter Stella Johnson, marimba band Ngorimba, the talented guitarist and singer Billie Zizi and almost 20 other people, and that’s not counting the artists who bet on the level of young people of the festival full of novice artists.

Another staple of HotC is the Indigenous Fashion Show, which this year will take place as part of the event and not as part of the event.
“Heather Bouchier is the designer who was the first to bring fashion to the city centre,” says Demas, who worked with the talented textile artist on previous shows. “It’s on fire right now and it’s meant to make Edmonton a hub for Indigenous fashion. “
For example, Darla Contois from Little Bird, who just won Best Lead Actress at the Canadian Screen Awards, wore a satin maxi dress by Bouchier to the ceremony.
Collections by Bouchier and others will be at the festival.
Meanwhile, the Story Slam takes place at 4:30 p. m. on Sunday and is invited.
“If you have to compete,” explains Demas, “show up at four in the afternoon. The storytellers have five minutes to surprise the judges with a transparent story,” he laughs, noting that the young people will be nearby on the playground. First position prices $300.
In addition to a craft market, there are also thirteen workshops, plus cedar weaving and a photography workshop run by McCauley resident Joe McClinton.
“McBain Camera lends us several cameras and other people can come and learn how to take a smart photograph of a festival,” says Demas.
“And then they can stop by and drink at the festival and there will be a festival to see which shots are the best. “
The decided winners will be published in the Boyle McCauley News.
Meanwhile, Ryan Lacanilao’s writing workshop, Nostalgic Narratives, runs from a. m. a 12:30 p. m.
“This is going back to your formative years to invent poetry,” explodes Angelesins Demas, nothing. There is also a comedy workshop called Le Cœur de los angeles Comédie at 6. 30pm on Saturday.
“Kamal Alaeddine then appeared on the Gong Show and Tonight Show,” explains the festival programmer. “So he’ll teach us how to write a joke. “
This will continue until the Stand Up Comedy Show at 8 p. m. Saturday.
Do not hesitate to consult the complete calendar of all the events and workshops in heartcityfest. com, where this year all the visual arts will live from being in person. This year’s featured artist is Elliot Taylor, who is not only part of Borderline Thrills, but also Art Nouveau-inspired portraits are the source of the festival’s main image.
This is the only component of HotC that has gone virtual, ps.
“This year we’re going to do something ambitious,” says Demas, noting that instead of a published program, they’ll have an interactive online program on the Story City app, which will include all the programming notes, facts about the artists, and links to their work.
A virtual guided tour is also presented.
“The avatar organizing the field trip is former board member James Jarvis, who passed away last year,” says Demas. “James’ character will take you on a field trip to the park and you can play with him. “
For those who don’t have a phone or are hesitant to download the app, volunteers provided with iPads can also organize the tour.
“I’m very excited about all of this,” says Demas. I think the neighbors will be pleased to see us again, I hope other people from other parts of the city come and see how wonderful our community is. “
