The Serie A duo need ANOTHER Scottish Premiership star for a summer move, and the club may lose him for next to NOTHING.

Italian Serie A side Cagliari and Sassuolo are credited with interest in Dons midfielder Connor Barron.

Scotland’s Under-21 star is out of contract this summer and he has yet to agree terms for an extended stay at Pittodrie.

Aberdeen will have to pay a progression fee if the 21-year-old, who arrived here via the Dons academy, decides to move on.

Barron has already been linked with transfers to Celtic and Belgian side KRC Genk.

And it’s not the first time he’s been linked with Italian teams either.

In fact, Sassuolo have been keeping an eye on Barron since the summer of 2022 and in the past it was rumoured that Bologna were fond of the midfielder.

If Barron makes the decision to move to Italy, he will follow in the footsteps of several young Scottish talents who have joined Serie A in recent years.

Lima Henderson decided to swap Celtic for Bari in 2018, after a year on loan at Hibs.

Since then, he has been exercising his industry in Italy, in Serie A and Serie B for Hellas Verona, Empoli, Lecce and Palermo.

Josh Doig left Hibs to sign for Verona in 2022 for around £3m and is now at Sassuolo.

Scottish foreigner Jack Hendry was also briefly on loan at Cremonese when he fell out of favour at Club Brugge.

Aaron Hickey joined Bologna from Hearts for an undisclosed payment estimated at around £1. 5m in 2020 and, after an impressive two years, secured a move to Premier League debutants Brentford and a regular in Scotland.

But perhaps it’s Barron’s former teammate Lewis Ferguson who has the highest-profile good luck story.

Ferguson has been a revelation since his arrival at Bologna two-and-a-half years ago.

He is now captain of the team controlled by Thiago Motta and has attracted interest from Juventus and Napoli.

Ferguson broke Denis Law’s record for Scotland’s all-time most level-headed goalscorer in Serie A history in December last year and now has thirteen goals.
