It’s the end of an era after three long years and two seasons. What is arguably Netflix’s best show in terms of combined critic and audience scores over two seasons, Arcane, is now over as of today.
The series finale includes 3 episodes that aired on Saturday, joining two 3-episode series that aired the last two weekends, a broadcast layout that the creators had to “fight for,” they said, given the non-traditional nature of Arcane’s release. has been
I haven’t seen them yet (it’s nine o’clock in the morning!), so no spoilers, but the viewership score is down slightly now that those episodes are live, going from nine6% to nine4%, the critical scores are still one hundred percent perfect. So, Arcane will end its series with all-time Netflix scores based on the number of reviews, viewership, and number of seasons.
No, there is no Arcane season 3 by design. It’s not canceled, it’s just that Riot needs to move from that character organization to some of the other 169 League champions for new stories. This is what co-creator Christian Linke says. He had to say about the plan for long-running shows:
“Yes, lately we are preparing a series of follow-up projects. In reality, Arcanum has been thought of as the first step, very similar to the trial by fire. You have to ask yourself, “Can we do this?” Do we have the chops? Do we have the characters? Do we have the narrative? So now we’re working on follow-up projects and it’s actually fun to start looking into some of the other characters and regions of our world.
The question, of course, is what those projects would be and how long it would take to complete them. There have been 3 years between seasons of Arcane, longer than almost any viewing even in the streaming era, so it may as well be 2027 or later until we see a new series, whatever that may be. Possibly it is, if they still use this time and good looks carefully the taste for consumer animation (which they obviously should). However, since Arcane season 2 was worth the wait, I would love to see another series this good, even if the wait is endless. At least we don’t have a cliffhanger or a partial story so far.
I’ll watch those last 3 episodes until the end of the day and see how things develop. It’s hard to believe that they may not land, but in fact there are many scenarios that want to be completed. Either way, I can’t wait to see how this all ends.
