EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The author and maker of YouTube’s The Quiz Channel, which includes the Adolf Hitler symbol as a component of a Michigan state quiz used on its video forums before a game opposed to Michigan’s No. 2, said the school did not ask permission to use its content or pay for it.
“This is an absolutely trivial and general question, presented in an out-of-place context,” Floris van Pallandt wrote on his YouTube page on Sunday. “Ignoring the dark sides of history is by no means the solution, quite the opposite. “
The channel is publicly available and free for users.
When Michigan’s No. 2 finished off a 49-0 win over the Spartans on Saturday night, Michigan state spokesman Matt Larson apologized for irrelevant content posted more than an hour before kickoff.
“MSU will no longer use a third-party source for the long term and will put in place stricter approval and variety procedures for all video card content in the long term,” Larson said.
Michigan State aired The Quiz Channel, which featured 40 queries in its most recent video, adding asking where Hitler was born with his symbol before Austria appeared as an answer. The previous question asked, “In Star Trek, what color is Spock’s blood?”before it shows green as a response.
“I deeply regret the symbol displayed at Spartan Stadium, which has made many in our network feel alienated and unsafe,” the university’s interim president, Teresa Woodruff, said Sunday. “It’s unacceptable. Last night I called for a full review of this educational occasion and we will take all mandatory steps to align our messages and movements with our values.
“I will work with our Jewish cadres and with each and every member of minority populations to make sure that Spartans feel that this is a place where anyone and everyone can live, paint, attend classes, and attend welcome events. “
