Top 10: Best Goals to Record Videos on Panasonic GH5

Here’s The Top 10 of Clinton Stark: the most productive lenses for shooting videos with her Panasonic Lumix GH5 camera. Updated in August 2020.

Well, you have a shiny new Panasonic Lumix GH5 camera. If you smile to your ears, I get it. The GH5 is an amazing camera. In my tests, I can see why he praised. The feature set is amazing for a camera that costs less than $2000; it is unreasonable, however, a smart deal compared to much of the 4K competition. And the picture is very nice. I even recently used the mirrorless beast to shoot my short film Crazy or Die (see below). Using the camera in this task stunned me.

Now that you also have a GH5, it’s probably time to install a lens in the case. If you’re just getting started, a little tip: don’t have too crazy to go too far. Make a budget and carefully plan your purpose kit.

You will probably need a canopy with as much focal diversity as possible. And keep in mind that if you just invest in GH5’s Native Micro Four Thirds (MFT) support, lock yourself in a little. If you make the decision to upgrade later, those lenses will not be compatible with others, for example, more expensive cameras such as those made through RED or Sony. That’s why I’m a fan of the widely used Canon EF lens mount.

First, a little bit about “the best.”

Is that 10 the best?

Yes and no.

I found out they were the most productive for my desires. Note that I basically photograph short films, occasions and interviews for Stark Insider. Those who shoot on travel and wildlife may want something different. In addition, there are many tactics to interpret the most productive term: greater technical functionality and sharpness (DxOMark is a smart position to look for this); more productive in low light; Best cinematic look; higher price for money; Best Compact Lens Best Zoom; And so on.

A lens, like a camera, is just a tool. No more, no less.

Think of this list as a guide. A starting point. Some concepts for if you are looking for a new lens for your GH5.

Not this old saying: you pass out with your camera, but you marry your past.

Finally, smart shot! If you’re like me, your GH5 accompanies you almost anywhere (and, in my case, replaced my 80D as the camera of choice).

Monture: MFT Buy Panasonic Lumix G 12-35mm I f / 2.8: Amazon Good for: everything, run and shoot, documentaries and events

If you can only buy one lens for your GH5 (or GH4), that’s a smart one. It is a local mount, which helps keep the entire package compact. In addition, it benefits from Panasonic’s double magic stabilization, which combines lens stabilization with integrated camera stabilization. With the trimming factor, the focal diversity is approximately 24 to 70 mm. It is quite ideal for taking wide shots and then zooming in to capture a drama up close. Yes, there is an updated edition of this objective that Panasonic has introduced with the GH5. If you have money, pass it on. But I got noticeable effects with the original edition (Mark I), and you can also save a little.

Monture: EF Buy Sigma 18-35 mm f / 1.8 ART: Amazon Good for: almost everything (albeit in scope), short films, music videos, corporate work

Sigma 18-35mm ART … this purpose temporarily becomes legendary. Sony user. RED USER. Panasonic user. Regardless of the camera you own (or rent), it turns out that everyone talks about this lens in the respective forums. I’ve been using it for almost four years on a variety of cameras (RED Raven, Canon C100, GH5, 80D, Blackmagic) and it’s probably the bee’s knees. Net Tack, but also very cinematic, which means that the bokeh and the blurred spaces seem dreamy. Just a big lens. Note that to use it on the GH5, you will need an EF-MFT adapter. I use the Metabones Ultra 0.71 and it works very well. The smart thing to do is – back – because it’s an EF mount, you’re a bit of a time tester if you buy/rent a high-end Sony (like the FS7) or RED (Raven, Scarlet-W). The ultimate recommendation.

Tip: Here’s how those annoying, noisy camera strap rings of your GH5.

Mount: MFT, EF Buy Rokinon 35mm Cinema t / 1.5: Amazon for EF editing (very valuable for a film lens with this type of structure and symbol quality) Good for: making movies, music videos, low light situations

Once you have some fundamental lenses in your bag, you may need to consider a proper “cinema” lens. Typically, this means several things: (a) a first (i.e. no zoom); (b) an unhooked opening ring; (c) Increased the rotation diversity in the concentrate ring (for an accurate adjustment of the rack concentrate) You will also find that film lenses sometimes paint more than their opposite zoom numbers in low light conditions. The productive highs, the estimated highs, also tend to breathe less, meaning that there is little or no replacement in the symbol when it replaces the concentration point. Since we’re talking about quite expensive lenses here, I’d take rokinon’s cinematic diversity into consideration. This 35 mm is, in a word, exceptional. Especially for the price. That other people even dare to compare it to more beloved things like Zeiss and Cooke deserve to tell you that it’s actually good. I love the elegant movement of the ring, the charming symbols. I especially like the price! By the way, although this lens (like some others on this list) doesn’t have IS, the GH5 does wonders with its built-in IBIS. In fact, it’s impressive and much bigger than what the Sony A6500 gave me and its gelatin-shaped deformation. Therefore, you can hold such movie lenses with the GH5, which is not imaginable (no shaking) on cameras like the C100, FS7, A7S II, etc.

Which is invisible to the eyes.

Mount: MFT Buy Voigtlander Nokton 25mm f / 0.95: Amazon Good for: Making Movies, Low Field Intensity, Low Light

Voigtlander manufactures very special manual primers for the MFT mount: 17.5 mm, 25 mm, 42.5 mm. Make your choice. In my delight, they are less clinical than I would get from a Panasonic or Olympus equivalent. By that I mean that they have character, which can also be another way of saying that they are less acute. But that’s a very clever thing, because you may need your symbol to be closer to the movie. And those inhabitants of Voigtlan, at least because of my pleasure with them in gh5, is that they decrease the “video aspect”. It’s a non-public taste. These are also a bit expensive, so I can possibly also hire one first and make sure it fits exactly what you need. The quality of manufacture is exceptional, as are the elegant butter rings. A natural pleasure to photograph with those glasses.

Mount: EF Buy Canon EF 50mm f / 1.8 STM: Amazon (is there any offer for a lens?) Good for: street work, versatile, low light

Fifty chic. It’s a deal and a half. Ideal in low light. A compact profile. Acute and easy to use. Canon’s premium material. A harvest for a reason. (Warning, trimming it with a GH5 will work at about 70 mm with a Metabones adapter)

Mounting: MFT. wildlife, sports, interviews

A lens dear, but offers. The Canon 70-200 mm is the ubiquitous white lens seen in Canon DSLR cameras on sports occasions; is more common on primary occasions such as the Olympics or the World Cup. But it’s also an appropriate purpose for conducting interviews. And for travel and wildlife. At the narrow end, you can get a great separation from the theme and background. Note that this is a Canon EF mount, which means you want an adapter (smart or stupid). Again, I use Metabones Ultra 0.71 on my GH5.

Monture: EF Buy Tokina 11-16mm f / 2.8: Amazon Good for: wide angle, cityscapes and landscapes, establishment

I admit this is my least used lens on this list. Not because it’s not good. In fact, it’s fair for the price. I just don’t want to shoot that often. So why did I come with the Tokina 11-16 mm on this list? Because we want a broad plan. Maybe it’s a coup. Or maybe it’s because you’re capturing amazing perspectives for travel videos. Anyway, this Tokina is a forged option. (not that it deserves to matter, but, man, this lens is ugly)

Monture: MFT, EF Buy Rokinon 85mm t / 1.5: Amazon Good for: bokeh, close-ups

I love the bokeh of this lens (EF version).

Monture: C Buy Angenieux 12-120 mm: see eBay Good for: Brian DePalma Start Mode or Jean-Luc Godard Cigarette Mode

Okay, we’re at the top two ends of my list. So they’re getting a little weird. If you’re starting with your GH5, don’t start here. Go back to number one and take a look at the features there. If you’re like me, and you’ve been photographing for many years and you’re still exploring new looks, here’s an idea. Angenic 12-120 mm: this is the most outstanding lens used during the era of the French New Wave in the 1960s. One of my favorite directors, Jean-Luc Godard, used it to shoot the revolutionary indie Breathless (1960) which led the French film to a decidedly out-of-studio and avant-garde direction. Now, thanks to eBay, you can also shoot with the same target! But … don’t necessarily expect the same results! Well, we can try. At the time, it was a very expensive glass. And today, Angenieux still manufactures high-quality, high-quality, beloved lenses that we, as mere mortals, may never allow ourselves. Then why not? Opt for vintage. You’ll want a reasonable C/MFT adapter. And keep in mind that the lens will concentrate at 12mm, so you’ll want to zoom in a little or use the GH5’s long zoom to trim. This is far from ideal, so again, continue with caution if you stay on this path. I love the comfortable look. And the zoom has a crank that can help me get wonderful pictures like Brian DePalma. Combined with the gh5’s flexible symbol frequency characteristics, you get slow, artistic nirvana.

Frame: thread mm Buy SLR Magic Anamorphot-50 Anamorphic Adapter 1.33x: Photo B-H Good for: making movies, music videos

SLR Magic manufactures many attractive lenses and adapters for MFT cameras. The Anamorphot is an adapter (with glass, so you can also call it lens, but not only paint) that allows you to take photos in this well-loved giant “range” screen format. Possibly it would seem glorious. This requires additional paints. On the one hand, the symbol will appear distorted on the LCD (you can “unzip” it using an external monitor). And I want to make additional paintings by publishing your NLE to get the right footage. However, it is not complicated. To use this adapter, place it on the front of a “take” lens. This adapter uses glass to achieve this anamorphic look. There are many YouTube websites and videos detailing the process. Basically, you can also spend days, or even weeks, learning and playing. If you’re shooting a video clip, short film or ad, and you want it to look high-end… consider the possibility of filming in anamorfosis with SLR Magic Anamorphot and at 60 ips and / or 96-120 ips . But it’s going to take a little practice.

Here we go. Ten of my favorite goals are to record videos with the GH5.

To record videos on GH5, here are some of my favorite goals:

And the specialists:

But remember, as I often like to remember:

A lens, like a camera, is just a tool. No more, no less.

Most likely, everything else will have an even greater effect on your project. Lighting. Composition. Sound. And, of course, history. So don’t worry too much. Try to avoid the laughing game which is the investigation of paralysis and faint and shoot, shoot and shoot.
