Twisters star Daisy Edgar-Jones points out the similarities between her film and the original Twister.
Twisters, of course, is the long-awaited sequel to the 1996 tornado crisis film, starring Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt.
In Twister, Hunt plays Dra. Jo Harding, a meteorologist obsessed with tornadoes all her life since she killed her father in an F5 tornado as a child. Paxton plays Bill Harding, Jo’s ex-husband who was a typhoon hunter before becoming a meteorologist.
In Twisters, which hits theaters July 19, Edgar-Jones plays Kate Cooper, a meteorologist who, like Hunt’s Jo Harding, is haunted by beyond trauma. Glen Powell plays Tyler Owens, a storm-hunting YouTube influencer, alongside Edgar-Jones. “The Tornado Wrangler”.
In an interview with Variety, Edgar-Jones explained how Twisters, which is billed as a standalone sequel to Twister, compares to director Jan de Bont’s 1996 blockbuster.
“It feels like a genuine next chapter, although we have a lot of love for the original. We have Dorothy [the weather sensor from the first film],” Edgar-Jones told Variety. “We have moments and costumes that reflect the original. “
Where the Crawdads star Sing also noted that many of the original members who worked on 1996’s Twister are on board with Twisters, which includes “a lot of visual effects guys. “
“Twisters is set now, in 2024,” Edgar-Jones explained to Variety. That’s what it looks like now that we have YouTube hunters, we have new technology, and we have higher CGI. “
Twisters was filmed in Oklahoma, where storms were “constantly” occurring during director Lee Isaac Chung’s filming, Daisy Edgar-Jones said.
“One day we were filming this scene where a tornado passes through a farmer’s market, and they created this set full of those booths. And that crazy windstorm came and swept away the entire landscape,” Edgar-Jones told Variety. “We were crouching in the nearby shops, watching the whole set being destroyed and then filming its destruction 20 minutes later when it was put back up. “
Edgar-Jones also noticed that when she and Glen Powell were filming a scene in which their characters were searching in the distance for a “mothership,” also known as a mesocyclone cloud, when one of the large clouds shaped them into truth.
“We looked like two of the dumbest typhoon hunters because we were like, ‘Where’s he?’And it was literally there,” Edgar-Jones recalled to Variety. We all had to leave and that caused a tornado. Isaac was We chased him and we saw him. We were not allowed to do so for insurance reasons.
Also starring Anthony Ramos and Maura Tierney, Twisters hits theaters domestically on July 19.
