The upcoming Netflix movie Uglies, starring Joey King, will shed light on how criteria of good appearance can affect and distort society.

Based on the 2005 novel written by Scott Westerfield, it will explore a dystopian society that imposes cosmetic surgery on all sixteen-year-olds to make them “beautiful”.

We are already obsessed with this story. Here’s what we know about the ugly.

“In a futuristic dystopia in which standards of good looks are imposed, a teenager waiting for mandatory cosmetic surgery embarks on an adventure with her missing friend,” reads the synopsis of the plot of The Ugly.

“Basically, what happens is you have surgery at 16 so you can see what you need,” Uglies director McG (who also produced the 2000s teen drama The OC) told Netflix’s TUDUM. “Society believes that if we all look as we need to, we can eliminate conflict. “

While the book Uglies came out in 2005, Joey talked about its growing and enormous importance over the years. “I think it’s incredibly applicable that we do this now,” he told TUDUM. McG added that the way social media distorted the well-being appearance criteria influenced the making of the film.

“The movie is about good looks as interior,” he said. “It’s a commentary on what we’re going through today, where so many other people can’t just take a photo and post it on social media. You have to clean it up, you have to modify it, you have to do what it takes to provide that idealized good-looking edit. And This is the time to say, “Take a deep breath, work on your inner game, love others as they are,” and settle for who you are,” and interestingly, that is a much more fruitful way to live.

Joey King will be joined by Orange Is The New Black star Laverne Cox, Stranger Things’ Chase Stokes, Keith Powers, Brianne Tju, Jan Luis Castellanos and Charmin Lee.

It will be released on Netflix international on September 13.

The trailer begins with a memorable quote from Joey’s character, Tally, who reflects on the operation that has become normalized at age 16 so that each and every user becomes “beautiful. “

“All my life I sought to be fair; I thought that would replace everything. I hope it stays that way,” she says.

But it turns out that the closer the operation gets, the more doubts begin to arise about what “beauty” can be achieved. “No matter how righteous they make you, don’t let them erase you,” she told a friend.

We can’t wait to see Uglies.
