Vince Clarke de Erasure on ‘The Neon’, excursion and pubs in London

“I didn’t know this year Erasure’s 35th birthday. It wasn’t in our head when we were working on this album,” said Vince Clarke, part of the iconic British synth-pop duo formed in London, England, in 1985.

The Neon is Erasure’s eighteenth studio album. The couple, made up of composer and keyboardist Clarke and singer-songwriter Andy Bell, have more than 25 million albums worldwide.

The explanation for why this album happened when he got here is that He basically called me Andy and said, ‘Do you need to make a new album?’We filmed long before that, so I was surprised to hear Andy so soon after touring, however, he sought to start running on a new record again, and we did.

“I think he was inspired. He and I have erasure’s outdoor plans, but I think he has less, so he spends a lot of time spinning his thumbs,” Clarke joked.”But seriously, we’ve had a great time too,” on tour, and our dates are more powerful than ever.

After three decades and a part together, the couple can be frank and direct with others.

“It’s a blessing, absolutely. If Andy is not in the concept I just proposed, and vice versa, we have to be fair and fortunately we can be fair,” Clarke confirmed.”I think that’s one of the reasons we’ve been in combination for so long.”

The artistic did not stop for the couple, and the last album came in combination organically and quickly.

“The fact that we had so many songs to choose from at the time was a vital factor. We usually wrote all ten songs, and that’s it, but for that, one way or another, we wrote a lot more,” Clarke, “We knew there were smart concepts and then it was up to the record company to check what was going to be on the album and which ones wouldn’t come out yet, they’ll come out at some point in the future.that way, you don’t throw anything away.

“If Andy farts when we play live, someone will probably record it and say, “Well, there’s a 12-inch one, ” he laughs.

One thing the organization insists on doing is being physically present.Neon’s vocals were recorded in Atlanta, Georgia, and Clarke joined Bell in the studio sessions, and the band made the mix in London, England.

“We’re elsewhere, but we don’t use the Internet as a tool to do what we do.We don’t paint that way,” he said. When it comes to genuine song composition, we have to be together. We’re not a back-and-forth group. In addition to Andy, who came to the US.Usa, we spent some time in the UK.For me, the joy of writing songs is being in a room with Andy and creating a concept from scratch. That hasn’t changed.”

However, the album has a dual goal for London.

“I had a wonderful time there,” Clarke recalls.” I discovered this wonderful hotel in London’s East End, which is close to the studio.I also love pubs, and there were some wonderful ones nearby that looked like eastenders.I used to sit there for a while, doing nothing special, dining a bunch of scraped red meat and a pint of bitterness.I really like it.”

Do they detect it when it’s there?

“Sometimes, ” he confessed. To be honest, I make the most of the classified ads I pass on because there are other people who are older than me.”

Clarke at home when we talked, however, it’s not where he intended to be.

“The tour was all planned. Everything was written and the total case of COVID began. In theory, I don’t tell you about the east coast of the United States, I’m in the UK on a field trip, but everything has been suspended,” he confirmed. The plan is to postpone the tour until next year, but that helps keep converting because no one knows for sure. The idea that things would get better now. It’s frustrating. It’s frustrating for us, but it’s frustrating for us,” enthusiasts and agents. They’re going to hell.”

“We have a team of other people we’ve been working with for years, and they’ve all suffered. They don’t have a job. Some of them are other people who have been traveling with me since I started; they still promise to retire, but they never did.The industry in general is suffering, and that’s a real shame, and there’s no easy way out.You can do exhibits online, but that doesn’t compare to the live experience. We’ll see what happens. It’s a little depressing.

He added: “We have an incredibly unwavering fan base. Even if they don’t buy all the records, they come to the concerts. I think we did a pretty smart performance, well Andy is acting very well.”

“I’m sorry right now. Even if I say that filming is not necessarily the most productive component of this life or career, the fact that I now look in some other year, or perhaps more, not to turn?I think it affects you.

Erasure continues in theaters around the world.During the duo’s last tour, in 2018, they hosted several nights at the iconic Wiltern in Los Angeles, California.

“We had a good time in Los Angeles, and there are some really smart rooms in Los Angeles where I’d like us to play,” Clarke says.”We’ve played in many bigger places, but many smaller places are also pretty cool We did some nights at the Wiltern, and those were special shows.

While several other synthesized and electronic artists have entered the world of film soundtracks, this is something Clarke and Bell have still explored beyond diving to check the water.

“I’ve made some soundtracks for various independent projects, and I like to make them, but it’s the big leagues. It’s about who you know,” Clarke says. I’ve tried. Many years ago, maybe. Twenty years ago, I spent a lot of time in Los Angeles looking to connect with other people to make soundtracks, it was very daunting.

“However, if you’re a filmmaker and you’ve spent your life with this cinematic idea, getting all the right connections and getting there, you don’t have to give the soundtrack to someone who’s never done it before.”

And there’s a very British film establishment clarke would like to explore.

“I’d love to make a Bond theme, absolutely. I’m a big Bond fan, I love those videos and I’d like to be asked to make one, but that’s never been the case.”

In addition to having a rich, powerful, moving and sensual pop voice, once back expertly featured in The Neon, Bell has the obligatory tips for taking on Bond’s orchestral drama.Among other projects, he has effectively directed the opera as Montresor in Peter Hammill.and Chris Judge Smith, The Fall of the Usher House.

“Maybe the next album we’re going to make deserves to be inspired through Bond, and maybe inspire manufacturers to invite us to make a theme,” Clarke says.”What I think would be even more ideal would be to make the soundtrack. The focus is on the main theme, however, I would be much more interested in making the film’s full soundtrack. That’d be great. If we broadcast it, who knows?

The Neon will be available in digital format and in popular and luxury limited editions of vinyl, CD and cassette from Friday, August 21, 2020.
