Warner Bros. Discovery is shutting down its independent vintage streaming service Boomerang. The last day of service will be September 30, 2024.
After that date, many of the cartoons recently featured on the service, including Scooby-Doo, Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry, The Flintstones, and Courage the Cowardly Dog, will be available to stream on WBD’s Max streaming platform.
Platform consolidation isn’t entirely a surprise. The SVOD Boomerang app was introduced in 2017, before the company introduced HBO Max (now rebranded as Max) in 2020. Following the launch of Max, which consolidated a wide diversity of entertainment into a single streaming destination, the concept of a standalone platform has just emerged. Old cartoons are hard to sell to consumers. The company has never released figures on the number of subscribers to the Boomerang service.
According to WBD, existing Boomerang users will have their subscription transferred to the ad-free edition of Max with no value adjustments “until further notice. “
