It was a long adventure for Mulan, but persistent movie theater closures (and public reluctance to stop in reopened theaters) eventually led Disney to abandon theatrical displays. The remake of the 1998 animated film heads to Disney, where anyone who has $30 in reserve can see it, a belated but correct decision.
Now, ten days before the audience can nevertheless release it, a new promotional feature highlights how Disney made a decision much earlier, even more vital: the cast of the actress who would play Mulan.
“We had an amazing time looking for Mulan all over the world. We searched each and every village, and once in the room with Yifei, I learned that I had discovered my warrior,” explained director Niki Caro, in a language she may have just taken from the script.
Liu Yifei, an Wuhan local who shared his training years between Queens and China, won the role. He had a long career in China, but Mulan is his first foray into American cinema. She says in the featurette that she feels a “strong connection” to the character because Mulan is “present and focused”.
Two of his co-starists come to say that he is “perfect” for the role and that he brings “a sense of innocence but maturity” to Mulan, the characteristics that outline the character.
More specifically, Yifei could do whatever it took without acting. “She is a complete martial artist. You can wield a sword. He can ride a horse,” Caro says.
“No one else could have played the role of Mulan.”
Mulan arrives at Disney – Premier Access on September 4.
