Apparently, Jerry Seinfeld has been obsessed with Pop-Tarts.
“My first memory of Pop-Tarts is that once I tried them, I assumed they wouldn’t keep making any other kind of food,” Seinfeld told Netflix fan site Tudum. “It wouldn’t be to eat anything else. “
He has now co-written, directed, and starred in a film about his favorite food. And on May 3, “Unfrosted” will begin streaming on Netflix.
With a lot of comedic artistic license, the film vaguely tells the origin story of the Pop-Tart. The setting is Battle Creek, Michigan, where Kellogg’s and Post are headquartered. By the early 1960s, those corporations were “the two undisputed giants of ‘The Grain World,'” Seinfeld says in the trailer. But when Post invents a non-perishable fruitcake, Kellogg’s makes the decision to jump into “the race to reinvent breakfast” with its own edition of this breakfast treat.

There’s no doubt that Seinfeld’s prominence in global comedy has attracted many other comedians. More than a dozen high-profile names are among the cast, including Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Amy Schumer, Hugh Grant, Christian Slater, Bill Burr, Daniel Levy, James Marsden, Jack McBrayer and Fred Armisen.
“We hadn’t had anybody for a long time,” Seinfeld told Tudum. “And then Hugh Grant called and said he’d heard about the movie and he wanted to be Tony the Tiger. Then the next thing I knew: everyone was there and it was amazing.
Seinfeld said he liked the concept of serious, loud boardroom executives waging a war over a product full of frosting, sprinkles and sugar. What would it be like for adults to fiercely fight children’s hearts and taste buds?
In fact, Seinfeld and Co. treats this race to invent the Pop-Tart as if it’s as intense as the area’s run, basing the setting of “Unfrosted” on the area’s 1983 epic drama, “The Right Stuff. “Will the release of Pop-Tarts be a wonderful big bang? Or will the Pop-Tart crash and burn?
We already know the answer, but it will be fun to watch the take-off.
